2 Why are we doing this energized?
Take some time to decide if it is necessary to do this job energized. Could the job be done de-energized and grounded? What would be the impact? Would it be safer?

3 OSHA Required Tailgate Discussion Topics
Hazards Associate with the job Work Procedures Involved Special Precautions Energy Source Controls PPE Required The five topics required by OSHA to discuss in the tailgate. First letter from each topic = How Well Should Everyone Plan

4 Work Procedures Involved Hazards associated with the job
Special Precautions Energy Source Controls Personal Protective Equipment Be sure to record your emergency location and post in a location everyone on the crew knows. Have your PPE and First Aid kit available Be sure your AED is accessible. A safe job begins with a thorough inspection of… Tools Be certain all of your tools are in good shape. Equipment Make sure your trucks are all in working order take time to preflight your equipment and insure there are no surprise. Line/Structure Look over the line and structure. Are there any potential hazards? (Broken insulators, damaged wire, clearances over roads or from trees?) Be aware of your work area, be sure to cover anything you can reach touch or fall into. And anything that can reach touch or fall into you! Discuss all PPE needed for the job and wear your PPE. Be sure to inspect your equipment prior to use. Identify all voltages you are exposed to. Be sure to have all of your Arc-Flash protective gear on. Identify a dedicated observer Working in traffic exposes you to hazards that are difficult to control. Give the vehicles plenty of time to see and avoid you! Follow the manual of traffic control for your area. Slips trips and falls are some of the most common injuries, look for hazards that could cause this. Be sure to inspect and wear your fall arrest harness. Here are the five topics again with signs and bubbles to jump start tailgate discussion!! Click on the icon to bring up a text box. Click on the icon again to make the text box go away Gets the crew involved. Gives the feeling of knowing it is ok to ask questions, give suggestions, see something, say something! The next slides will get directly into the task at hand. Visual, written and audio will all be used here! There are suggestions in the notes as to what to discuss. This will get the Team involved, creating communication channels to open!

5 Be sure to set the protective device to single shot
Be sure to set the protective device to single shot. Check the adjacent spans for hazards. Be sure you have completed your briefing.

6 Bond the truck to the system neutral.

7 Install cover-up to the neutral.

8 Untie and lower the neutral
Untie and lower the neutral. Be sure it is not in direct uninsulated contact with the pole.

9 Install cover-up to the phase and insulator.

10 Install a temporary arm to support the conductor.

11 Relocate the line from the pole top pin to the temporary and recover it. Be sure to use positive control of the conductor while it is not secured.

12 Unframe the structure. Continue to wear you full PPE since you are still doing an energized job.

13 Frame the structure to the A. 2 specification
Frame the structure to the A.2 specification. Continue to wear you full PPE since you are still doing an energized job.

14 Frame the structure to the A. 2 specification
Frame the structure to the A.2 specification. Continue to wear you full PPE since you are still doing an energized job.

15 Place blankets over the pole top.

16 Move the phase back to the pole top and temporary tie it to the pin insulator. Reinstall full cover-up.

17 Remove the temporary arm.

18 Install a pole guard.

19 Connect a strap hoist from the dead-end shoe to the grip on the line
Connect a strap hoist from the dead-end shoe to the grip on the line. Snug it but do not tighten it yet.

20 Install a strp hoist to the other side from the shoe to a grip on the line. Snug it but do not tighten it yet.

21 Tighten the hoist to slack the wire going to the pole top
Tighten the hoist to slack the wire going to the pole top. Not to much, just so there is slack.

22 On the other side. Tighten the hoist to slack the wire going to the pole top. Not to much, just so there is slack.

23 Install an Insulated Mechanical Jumper (MAC) from one side of the line to the other. Just outside of the grips. Remember, when one side of the jumper is energized so is the other!

24 Use a support for the jumper prior to cutting it
Use a support for the jumper prior to cutting it. The pole top pin should also be tied in to support the jumper to the other side. Cut the jumper leaving enough room to place it into the dead-end shoe.

25 Remove the hoist and grip from the completed side.

26 Repeat the steps for the this side.

27

28 Remove the pin cover.

29 Remove the conductor from the pin.

30 Install a saddle on the line (source) side.

31 Install a new line jumper. Keep the ends coiled up for now.

32 Uncoil the load side and connect it to the line.

33 Uncoil the line side and connect the hot tap to the stirrup

34 Remove the MAC. Remember, when one end is energized so is the other.

35 Remove the pole top blankets.

36 Remove the pole guard and remove the neutral cover-up.

37 Place a screwdriver in the pole for temporary support and bring the neutral up

38 Place a strap hoist and grip on one side
Place a strap hoist and grip on one side. Snug it but don’t tighten it yet.

39 Place a hoist and grip on the other side
Place a hoist and grip on the other side. Snug it but don’t tighten it yet.

40 Tighten the hoists evenly to put a little slack in the conductor.

41 Install a MAC as a neutral jumper.

42

43 Support the conductor and cut it
Support the conductor and cut it. Be certain to cut it so you will have enough tail to place both sides in the dead-end shoes. Dead-end one side.

44 Dea-end the other side.

45 Install the neutral jumper.

46 Remove the MAC that was jumpering the neutral.

47 Remove one hoist and grip.

48 Remove the other hoist and grip. Remove the truck bond.

49 The job is completed.
