Checking the Victim

2. Checking for Life-Threatening Conditions
Life Threatening Conditions include:
Unconsciousness.
Not breathing
Trouble breathing
Severe bleeding

3. Checking for Consciousness
If the victim is conscious and alert, introduce yourself and get the victim’s consent.
If the victim is unconscious, call immediately

4. Checking a Conscious Victim
When possible, the victim should be checked in the position he/she is found.
Begin interviewing by asking the victim some simple questions:

Adult: Perform a head-to-toe examination.
Infant: Check the victim from toe to head.

6. Deciding Whether to Transport the Victim
Do not transport a victim—
If the trip may aggravate the injury or illness or cause additional injury.
The victim has or may develop a life-threatening condition.
If you are unsure of the nature of the injury.

7. Special Considerations
Checking a child/ infant observe the child before touching them.
Ask parent and the child for permission & explain what you are going to do.

8. Special Considerations
When checking an older adult—
Attempt to learn the victim’s name.
Get at the victim’s eye level.
Speak slowly and clearly.
Find out what medications the victim is taking.
Look for a medical alert tag
