1 How do we get 70 marks?! To understand how to plan 70 mark essays
Tuesday, 07 May 2019 How do we get 70 marks?! To understand how to plan 70 mark essays To be able to write an introduction and get the FULL 10 marks Print out pgs 1-8 of Geography guidance skills document

2 Read this: The impact of earthquakes in LEDCs is often more devastating and long lasting than the impact of similar earthquakes in MEDCs. This is because in LEDCs, there are limited communications, limited money and limited medical facilities. Also governments do not devote resources or have the expertise to implement early warning systems and emergency plans. For example, the earthquake of magnitude 7.0 in Haiti, 2010, caused severe damage and loss of lives with over 3 million people being affected, 220,000 deaths, and 280,000 buildings destroyed. The overall cost of the damage was $11 billion according to a BBC news Haiti report in In comparison to a similar magnitude earthquake of 7.2 in New Zealand, Christchurch September 2010, impacts of this hazard were much less severe than in Haiti because of the development of the country. Since New Zealand’s economy is strong and stable, human vulnerability was much lower than in Haiti as damages and the repair process occurred much quicker because of the financial availability present. However, Haiti’s economy is underdeveloped making it difficult to support themselves and make investments for further growth; they are stuck in a cycle of poverty. Print for students – example of good work. BUT get them to pick out places where it could have been improved.

3 Have a look at the hand-out
We will read through pages 1-8 together. It is about the report itself, and the introduction.

4 What do I need to actually put in my introduction?

5 What needs to be in the introduction?
Focus the question – what does the question require you to discuss? Define key terms from the question Introduce models and theories Introduce the case studies you will be using briefly ie. dates, locations, main point Initial sources of evidence

6 Lets have a look at 1. Focus the question
What do we need to do to focus the question? Question: To what extent is the level of development the main factor affecting the challenges posed by tectonic hazards? What is the command phrase? What does that mean? Print Q for students so they can annotate – do on mini white boards.

7 What is the theme of the question?
You will have some idea from the pre-release, but it’s important to REALLY read the question and UNDERSTAND it before starting to plan/write anything. Question: To what extent is the level of development the main factor affecting the challenges posed by tectonic hazards? What are the key themes in this question? So what could we use from what you have learnt?

8 2 – Key terms What are the key terms? What do they mean?
Question: To what extent is the level of development the main factor affecting the challenges posed by tectonic hazards? Tectonic hazard: Development: Is this the same throughout the world? Challenges: Is this the same throughout the world? What are the key terms? What do they mean?

9 3 – Models/Theories? Question: To what extent is the level of development the main factor affecting the challenges posed by tectonic hazards? What models/theories apply to this question? Where might you bring this into the introduction?

10 4. Case studies Question: To what extent is the level of development the main factor affecting the challenges posed by tectonic hazards? Which case studies would be useful for this question? What do you need to show evidence of to answer this Q? Developed vs not developed? Challenged vs not challenged?

11 5 – Sources of evidence? Where does your information come from so far? You will need to do this THROUGHOUT the report, but make sure you remember to do it in the introduction too!!

12 Read through this example introduction
Read through this example introduction. What are the key things they have included? Underline/highlight the main 5 things needed in different colours. Using the mark scheme, how many marks do you think this achieved? Print for students – Use an interactive board so they can do it together on the board!

13 How many marks? What HAS this person done well?
Print for students

14 Let’s start by planning….
To what extent is the level of development the main factor affecting the challenges posed by tectonic hazards? Interactive pens!

15 Now start writing the introduction together.
Para 1: Define tectonic hazard – remember, WHERE did you get this definition from? Para 2: Define other terms – do they vary depending on location/development? Para 3: Bring in the models/theories - diagrams Para 4: What are your case studies?

16 HOMEWORK 22/10 DUE 4/11 Make a plan for the report given to you:
‘Economic status is over-emphasised as the main reason for variations in the severity of natural hazard impacts.’ What evidence is there to support this view? (70 marks) Break down the question, follow the 5 steps we went over in the lesson to decide what the question is about. Use the structure from this lesson to help you decide what needs to go in it. Fill in the sheet given. Then write the introduction for the report – 10 marks.
