To Recap on El Nino Name one country that El Nino effects? What is the Spanish meaning of El Nino? What is the direction of winds in an El Nino year? What does teleconnections mean? What is the name of the Ocean involved with El Nino? What is the reverse effect of El Nino called? Name a particularly bad year for El Niño? Name 2 countries that were effected by this event and what the effects were?

Recap So far this topic you have learnt that some hazards are increasing in frequency and are having a greater impact on peoples lives. We have discovered that the unpredictability of El Nino and Global warming can lead to an increase in other natural hazards That although the number of deaths are falling because of disasters the economic costs are rising

Learning Objectives K- Know how to describe trends in hazards and impacts U- Understand how natural disasters can effect both MEDCs and LEDCs S-Be able to attempt exam style questions using the knowledge acquired in the last 3 lessons

Describe the patterns you seen in the 2 graphs below

What do we learn from this data?? From the geo physical data there is no solid evidence that the frequency or magnitude of earthquakes or volcanoes is increasing However, the hydro- meteorological hazards is definitely increasing. Highly likely to be linked to climate change and us humans!

Comparison of events and impacts! Huricane Katrina (USA-MEDC) 2005 vs Cyclone Sidr (Bangladesh- LEDC) 2007 Watch the following video clips and think about which place you think was most seriously damaged?

Comparison of events and impacts- complete your table! Katrina (USA) 2005 Sidr (Bang) 2007 Deaths1,500Up to 10,000 Economic Cost $150bn$1.7bn Social effects Contaminated water/houses destroyed/commu nities broken up/looters Contaminated water/spread of diseases/houses, communications, crops destroyed

Differences between events Katrina (USA) 2005 Sidr (Bang) 2007 Deaths1,500Up to 10,000 Economic Cost $150bn$1.7bn Social effects Contaminated water/houses destroyed/comm unities broken up/looters Contaminated water/spread of diseases/houses, communications, crops destroyed Why? As we discuss each category complete your sheet and give reasons for differences

Task! Attempt question 3 from example test questions

To end.. Look at the table below and fill in the blanks Katrina (USA) 2005 Sidr (Bang) 2007 Deaths1,500 Economic Cost $1.7bn Social effects Contaminated water/spread of diseases/houses, communications, crops destroyed
