Do Now: Please answer the following question in a short paragraph in your Reader’s Notebooks. Think about a fiction novel that you have read recently that you really enjoyed. Please explain what type of “fiction” novel it is, and what the novel was about. Be sure you include information about the stories major conflict and characters.

Fiction is an umbrella term. We use this to describe stories that are made up by an author. Turn and Talk What types of fiction are you familiar with?

Fiction- a story that is made up by the author Realistic fiction A made up story that could have really happened. Fantasy A made up story about magic and/or supernatural forms. Example: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Historical fiction A made up story that is set in the past and includes facts about past events, places or people. Example: Number the Stars Mystery A made up story in which the main character uses clues to solve a case.

Science fiction A made up story that tells about science and the technology of the future. Fable A fictional story that makes a moral point; uses animal characters.

Fairy tale A made up story containing imaginary creatures such as elves, fairies and giants. Adventure A made up story in which the character takes risks and has an exciting experience.

The aliens moved their ship closer to the planet. What had they discovered? It was new land. The new creature stepped foot out onto the planet. It was purple with long blue grass. The alien's ears were shaking with excitement. Turn and Talk: What makes this an example of science fiction? explain.

Their mother, who was born in the Colonies, had mixed feelings about the war. Like many others whose parents and grandparents had been born in New England, she didn’t think of herself as British. But still, she didn’t like the idea of war. “People will be hurt. And, if we don’t win, things could get very bad for us. They hang traitors, you know.” Turn and Talk - What is the genre of this excerpt? Which clues helped you identify the genre?
