2 Short vs. Long Term Goals
Have one long term goal Have several short term goals that help you meet your long term goal. Long Term Goal: I want to run a marathon in a year. Short Term Goals: I will be able to run 5 miles in 1 month I will be able to run 10 miles in 3 months I will be able to run 15 miles in 5 months I will be able to run 20 miles in 7 months

4 S = Specific Make your goal very specific.
Specific goal: In 2 months I want to be able to perform 15 pushups without stopping. Not Specific goal: I want to be able to do more pushups.

5 M = Measurable How are you going to be able to measure your goal?
Where do the standards come from? (don’t just make up standards) President’s Challenge Tests Fitness Gram Tests Are you using any technology? Pedometers Hear Rate Monitors

6 A = Achievable Is your goal Achievable for YOU?
Achievable: I want to run the mile without stopping in under 9 minutes. Not Achievable: I want to run the mile in under 6 minutes because my best friend can do it.

7 R = Realistic Is your goal Realistic?
Realistic: My goal is to do 55 curl ups in a minute. Unrealistic: My goal is to do 300 curl ups in a minute.

8 T = Timely Can you achieve your goal in a timely manner?
Timely: I will meet my goal within 6 weeks. Not timely: I will meet my goal within 6 years.

9 Action Strategies… Know your current fitness and activity level
Focus on short-term goals first…as you advance, add some long-term goals Allow enough time to achieve your goal Revise goals as you make progress Break long term goals into short term goals Monitor your progress toward meeting all your goals Keep an activity log to help monitor Reward yourself for achieving your goals
