7 The Aquatic Animal Health (Scotland) Regulations 2009
Regulation (EC) No 762/2008 on the submission by Member States of statistics on aquaculture Data to be submitted annually by GB to the Commission Size of production facilities Input to capture based aquaculture, only includes animals captured from the wild & fed prior to placing on the market The Aquatic Animal Health (Scotland) Regulations 2009 Authorisations of Aquaculture Production Businesses Change from registration to authorisation Initially all registered sites authorised & issued with a ‘Certificate of Authorisation’ All must comply with the conditions of authorisation & be assessed by the FHI ‘Risk based surveillance’- high risk sites, annual inspection; medium every 2 years low risk every 4 years Changes to authorisations e.g. new site, change of species farmed etc. must now be applied for in advance

8 SUMMARY Mussel and Pacific oyster remain the main species
produced in terms of both value and tonnage Mussel production increased by 22%, Pacific oyster by 45% Scallop aquaculture targets a niche market; poor spat settlement has reportedly led to low production in recent years; There has been a significant increase of 79% in the production of queens Employment levels showed a 14% decrease from 2007, to 348 staff Surveillance for the shellfish diseases bonamiasis and marteiliasis continued in Bonamia restrictions are in place at Loch Sunart and West Loch Tarbet For shellfish health purposes, 1/3 of all shellfish sites was inspected during In 2009, with the Implementation of EEC Directive 2006/88, risk based surveillance of sites will be introduced; The industry was dominated by small producers, although there was a continued trend toward large companies contributing to the annual production of all species.
