1 The UWI Petroleum Geoscience Programme Past, Present and Future
Wayne G. Bertrand 2012 September

2 What is Petroleum Geoscience?
It is a science that examines the Earth’s crust -its structures and composition in order to find areas of petroleum accumulation. It is a three year fulltime programme that covers the full spectrum of the petroleum exploration and development. The programme is a unique internationally recognised and accredited programme. highlight

5 How did this programme start?
Due to the need for highly trained local graduates to fill professional positions in the industry. This was all possible because of the initial funding and support received from some of the major companies in the oil industry in Trinidad. It continues to be monitored through the Liaison/Advisory committee and International accreditation

6 Staff & Students The department has 4 full time Academic and 2 support staff. The industry provides the 16 part-time lecturers needed for courses. 126 graduates to date of which 40% are first class honours. All of the graduates are either working in the industry or doing graduate degrees incl PhDs.

7 Students 150 Students have enrolled into the programme of which 126 are graduates to date.

8 Looking Beyond Market the programme to Caricom and South-South countries which have hydrocarbon potential Continue the Advisory Liaison Committee and renew all accreditation Introduce more field work Lobby for continued industry and government sponsorship

9 Looking Beyond Implement a Graduate Diploma/M.Sc programme
Implement graduate applied research projects with industry Develop cooperation in graduate courses and research with US, UK and Canadian Universities

10 Conclusion The B.Sc Petroleum Geoscience Programme has been successful in achieving its aims with excellence. It can be sustained with the implementation of the initiatives mentioned and with the continued support of Industry and Government.
