2 Local Government County: the largest territorial and political subdivision of a state Municipality: area in a county (city, town etc) Annexed: area previously unincorporated (not in a municipality) that is incorporated (added to a municipality) Charter: document that grants power to a local government (like a national or state constitution)

3 County Government Legislative Branch:
Board of County Commissioners: group elected to run a county, make laws, & provide for residents Forsyth County Commissioners: 7 members Local Education Authority/Board of Education: elected officials who make decisions regarding public education in an area Executive Branch: County Manager: person hired (NOT ELECTED) to run the day to day operations, oversee departments, and create the budget

4 Municipal Government Legislative Branch:
City Council: group elected to run a city, make laws, & pass a budget Winston Salem City Council: 8 members Aldermen: people appointed/elected to represent part of a city and work with the mayor and/or council Kernersville Aldermen: 5 members Executive Branch: Mayor: person elected to lead a city, create a budget, appoint officials, & represent a city Winston Salem Mayor: Allen Joines Kernersville Mayor: Dawn Morgan Allen Joines Dawn Morgan
