was the first African-American owned and operated newspaper published in the United States. Founded by Rev. Peter Williams, Jr. and other free black men in New York City, it was published weekly starting with the 16 March 1827 issue. ___________________________________ ____________________________________________ was a network of secret routes and safe houses established in the United States during the early-to-mid 19th century, and used by African American slaves to escape into free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and allies who were sympathetic to their cause. _________________________________ was an abolitionist newspaper founded by William Lloyd Garrison and Isaac Knapp in Garrison co-published weekly issues of The Liberator from Boston continuously for 35 years, from January 1, 1831, to the final issue of December 29, 1865.

happened when abolitionist John Brown lead a small group on a raid against a federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), in an attempt to start an armed slave revolt and destroy the institution of slavery. ____________________________________________________________ was a legal case in which the U.S. Supreme Court on March 6, 1857, ruled that a slave (Dred Scott) who had resided in a free state and territory (where slavery was prohibited) was not entitled to his freedom. The court believed that African Americans were not and could never be citizens of the United States; and that the Missouri Compromise (1820), which had declared free all territories west of Missouri and north of latitude 36°30′, was unconstitutional. The decision added fuel to the sectional controversy and pushed the country closer to civil war.
