3. The Spanish Conquest and Columbian Exchange
Columbian Exchange = the interchange of diseases, plants and human cultures between the New and Old Worlds after 1492
Completely remade North American environment!
Introduction of new crops (sugar, wheat), new animals (horses, sheep, cattle and pigs), and new pathogens.
Diseases spread rapidly in the population that had no immunities and was overworked by conquerors
Population declined 90%
land now open to European settlement.
Population explosion in Europe and Africa  immigration and slave trade

Freed indentured servants – concerns = high taxes, Berkeley’s unwillingness to exterminate Indians
In the end rebellion failed but…
planters searched for laborers less likely to rebel and a way to lessen class differences BLACK SLAVES!!
