3. Theatre Safety
Safety in the theatre means that crews, casts and audiences are kept safe from all possible hazards and emergencies.
Learning to work safely in the theatre is very important.
Most accidents can be avoided by replacing unsafe habits with safe practices.

4. Main Causes of Accidents
Not knowing what should be done
Not using tools properly
Using bad or faulty equipment
Carelessness
Taking unnecessary risks
Being in a hurry

5. The Danger Zone
The most dangerous time of theatre production is the strike – when the show’s performances are over and its technical elements are dismantled and stored. This is when the crew is tired but excited, so mistakes are often made.

6. Stop, LOOK, Listen and THINK
The most important rule of theatre safety is to always think about not only what you are doing at the moment, but to also think about what could happen, but also what could go wrong.
Look around you as you move objects, or as you begin to saw or use other, potentially dangerous items.

7. Rule # 1
ABSOLUTELY NO HORSEPLAY, RUNNING, ROUGH HOUSING, OR JOKING (INCLUDING PRETENDING TOOLS ARE WEAPONS OR USING TOOLS FOR ANYTHING BUT THEIR PROPER USE)… EVER… WHEN SET BUILDING OR USING TOOLS!

8. Rule # 2
Safety glasses or goggles are required to be worn when using any tool that can kick up dust or wood particles. Protect your eyes. Also, use noise cancelling ear protection if you will have extended exposure to the loud noises of a saw.

9. Rule # 3
When set building, closed toed shoes are to be worn. No sandals, slides or flip flops.
You also must wear pants, not shorts… jeans are best.

10. Rule # 4
Do not wear loose clothing or gloves when using power tools, and always tie back any long hair.

11. Rule # 5
Never operate any equipment if you do not know what you are doing, or feel uncomfortable or nervous operating it.

12. Rule # 6
Never operate any power tools or any cutting tools unless you have another person there and you can see each other.
In case of injury, no matter how minor (ex. A hot glue gun burn), notify the teacher immediately. If the injury is severe (ex. someone’s finger is off), don’t wait, call 911, then notify the teacher.

13. Rule # 7
Never work on sets when tired or in a hurry. Do not rush or take risks. That’s when accidents happen the most. Follow all safety procedures, ALWAYS!

14. Rule # 8
Practice cleanliness and orderliness in the building areas. Keep all areas free from tripping hazards or slipping hazards.

15. Rule # 9
Think an entire job through before starting… Remember measure twice, cut once. And lift with your legs, not your back.

Get as close to the object as possible for picking it up.
Make sure your footing is secure.
