Worms are a little bit wet or slimy. They need moisture to survive. They do not have bones or arms, or legs, or eyes, or teeth.

Worms have a lot of little rings across their entire body. These rings are called segments. When they are grown, they will have segments. On the first segment is the mouth and on the last segment is the anus.

On each segment, worms have a bunch of small hairs or bristles. These bristles are called setae. Setae help worms move. Worms have four pairs of these bristly hairs on each ring or segment.

At the very tip of anterior end, a worm has a flap of skin that hangs over the mouth. It is called the prostomium. The prostomium helps the worm keep from getting stuff in it’s mouth.

Worms have five hearts! All of these hearts pump blood through blood vessels just like your one heart.

Worms use some muscles and setae to move. When their muscles tighten up, their body becomes thinner and longer. This movement by muscles squeezes the front end, or anterior forward. The other long muscles squeeze together and help move the rear end, or posterior of my body towards the front end.

Worms do not have lungs. They breathe through their skin. A worm’s skin must stay wet in order for the oxygen to pass through it, but too much water will cause them to drown. Although if the water has lots of air in it, a worm can stay under for a long time.

The clitellum forms when a worm is about 4 to 6 weeks old. It has both male and female reproductive organs. (That means that a worm is neither a boy or girl, they are both).
