1 MLA FormatTing Start with a proper header: Name, Teacher, Class + Period, Due Date Get into the header space by double clicking it. To get the # to change, do “Insert” “Page Number;” once you see the page, type your last name. Now space between. Be sure you have indented each new paragraph. Be sure the font is in TIMES NEW ROMAN 12 Do Ctrl+A to highlight everything. Go to paragraph settings. Set spacing to 0 Before, 0 After, and double space.

2 Your Title Center it at the top of the first page.
Do not return more than once after it (no extra space under it). Capitalize all the words in the title, except for articles (the, a, an) and small prepositions fewer than 5 letters (on, of). Always capitalize the first word, no matter what it is. DO NOT underline, bold, make larger, or put your title in quotes. It should be in NORMAL FONT! Only have quotation marks in the title if part of your title is the title of the story, then you can put the story name in quotation marks.

3 Example Quotation From the Narration
Set up the quote, then put the direct text in regular quotation marks. Remove end punctuation. Use a parenthetical, and place a period at the end. Huck narrates, “Humans can be awful cruel to each other” (Twain 45). If the punctuation is an ! Or a ?, leave it in, but still do a period after the parenthetical One of the most obvious themes in the novel is stated explicitly in the final chapter: "Be true! Be true! Be true!" (Hawthorne 184).

4 Rules for Long Quotes If the passage is more than four lines long, you have to make a “BLOCK QUOTE.” So, erase your quotation marks. Now hit return to start the quotation on a new line. Indent the whole quote TWICE (1 inch). Now, your parenthetical citation should come after the closing punctuation mark. (So don’t move the period to the very end with a block quote)

5 Long Quotes

6 Quoting Dialogue If someone is talking, you need to TRIPLE QUOTE.
Type the doubles, then a space, then a single. Delete space. At the end, type a single then a double. The youngest woman in the crowd at the scaffold is not nearly so harsh as the older women. She seems to feel sorry for Hester when she says, “‘Ah, but, [ ] let her cover the mark as she will, the pang of it will be always in her heart’” (Hawthorne 36).

7 Paraphrased Material If you talk about something that happened in the novel, but you are putting it into your own words, YOU STILL MUST CITE THE PAGE NUMBER!! This is a “Fact” from the story or a piece of supporting detail from the story, so you have to tell what page that thing you are writing about happened on! Hester and Dimmesdale decide to run away when they are in the forest (Hawthorne 126).

8 Works Cited Last Name, First Name. “Short Story Title.” What Site it Was on. Publisher of Site. Date Uploaded. Web. Date Looked At. Go to the blog; click on the story. It will go to the host website. This is what you are citing. “To Build a Fire” is a PDF. You just change Web to PDF.
