2. What is a Smart Card?
Same size as a ATM card or a Credit card but is very different.
Stores data on a thin microprocessor embedded on the card.

3. History
1977- Three commercial Manufactories , Bull CP8, SGS Thomson, and Schlumberger began developing the IC card
1982-Field testing of serial memory phone cards took place in France-the worlds first major IC card
1993-Field test of multi-function smart card application in Rennes, France, where the telecarte function was enabled in a smart bank card
1994-EMV published joint specification for global microchip-based bank
1995-over 3 million mobile phone subscribers worldwide begin initiating and billing calls with smart cards
1999-Smart cards access common ID projects

4. Types of Smart Card
Contactless – Do not require physical contact between a card and reader.
Contact – has a contact area and is comprised with several gold-plated contact pads.
Hybrid – Dual-interface cards implement contactless and contact interfaces on a single card with some shared storage and processing.
