For our young Ladies and Gentlemen, our program: Develops Leadership, Responsibility, Confidence and sense of Accomplishment Increases involvement with the neighboring community Enhances understanding and application of the rules the game Provides and opportunity to gain work experience in a challenging and safe environment Opportunity to further an activity they love and in which they are already personally invested

Our youth umpires may be eligible for letters of recommendation and/or community service learning hours Youth umpiring requires leadership, confidence and the ability to make decisions under pressure – all great items to include in college applications. And……… A chance to earn some extra spending money!

Program Overview How many in the program and what games will I be doing? We have about 18 returning and are looking to add new youth umpires to start the 2018 season! Major Baseball - Field Umpire Major Softball - Plate and Field Umpires Minor A Baseball - Plate and Field Umpires

5 How many games are there to cover and how much can I earn?
2019 CLL Youth Umpire Program Program Overview How many games are there to cover and how much can I earn? Major Baseball games $22 for Field Umpire Major Baseball Plate Umpire covered by DSUA Major Softball – 30 games $27 Plate / $22 Field Umpire Minor A Baseball – 60 games $22 Plate / $17 Field Umpire Major Softball and Minor A Baseball will be covered by Youth Umpire(s). An adult will always be part of the umpiring crew or Game Coordinator.

Program Overview Game Coordinators? Rule 9.03 – If no adult umpire is available for a game, and non-adult umpires are used exclusively for that game, the local Little League must assign an adult Game Coordinator, or the game cannot be played. The Game Coordinator must not be a manager or coach of either team in the game, and cannot be assigned as Game Coordinator for more than one game at a time.

Program Overview Game Coordinators? The Game Coordinator duties shall include: Be included in the pre-game meeting. Remain at the game at all times, including between innings, in a position to see all action on the field and in close proximity to the field. If the Game Coordinator is not present or is unable to perform his/her duties, the game must be suspended until this condition is met.

Program Overview Game Coordinators? The Game Coordinator duties shall include: Oversee the conduct of all players, managers, coaches and umpires in the game, including the responsibility and authority to disqualify any player, coach or manager. Sole responsibility to judge as to whether and when play shall be suspended during a game for inclement weather/unfit playing conditions.

12 How will I get selected for assignments?
2019 CLL Youth Umpire Program Program Overview How will I get selected for assignments? Assignments are dependent on seniority, aptitude and demonstrated ability. **** Your best ability is AVAILABILITY **** Please ensure you complete the contact/information form prior to leaving today!! Include as many ways to contact you (and your parents) as possible We will attempt to make assignments with as much advance notice as possible but often Emergent Assignments arise which require quick/immediate responses

13 What will a typical game day look like?
2019 CLL Youth Umpire Program Program Overview What will a typical game day look like? Arrive to the complex 30 minutes or more prior to game time. Obtain your protective equipment from the umpire locker. Clubhouse is fitted with a combination door lock. Junior umpires will be trusted with the combination. After your game, return/clean your equipment and communicate any questions/concerns to Mark or Sean.

14 When will I be compensated?

Compensation will calculated/provided 3 times during the spring season: End of April (including scrimmages) End of May End of Canal Playoffs (approx. June 15th) Compensation amounts will be confirmed and checks issued by Canal Treasurer.

15 What happens after the regular season games are over?
2019 CLL Youth Umpire Program Program Overview What happens after the regular season games are over? Based on season performance, selected umpires will be given the opportunity to work Canal playoff games. These games will be compensated with a playoff game premium (additional $5/game). Selected umpires may also be given the opportunity to volunteer for All Star umpiring positions. Positions may be available in the District 9YO, 10YO, 12YO and Brandywine Invitational Tournaments. Opportunities may also become available during and after the season for youth umpires to work local travel baseball or softball scrimmage games or tournaments.

16 Will my son/daughter be safe?
2019 CLL Youth Umpire Program Program Overview Will my son/daughter be safe? Canal Little League requires Parents/Managers/Players to read/acknowledge a ‘Code of Conduct’ There is a zero tolerance policy at Canal Little League regarding unsportsmanlike conduct towards any game official. It is emphasized to all our managers/coaches that baseball/softball is a game of interpretations and umpires are ‘in training’ as are the players. Umpires will receive the respect their position deserves and all on field discussion will be handled by the manager only and in a civil manner.

17 Will my son/daughter be safe?
2019 CLL Youth Umpire Program Program Overview Will my son/daughter be safe? Insurance – Little League International will only cover umpire injuries for volunteers. As a paid umpire, any injuries sustained while working will need to be covered 1 of 2 ways: Through the individual’s medical insurance Through a supplemental umpire insurance policy Example – ABUA ($55/year)

Program Overview What’s next? Required Forms / Uniform Sizes / Contact Information Rules presentation Part 1 Meeting 2 (February) – Rules Part 2 / Umpire Mechanics Scrimmages – Each umpire will be trained/evaluated during pre-season scrimmage game(s). 1 scrimmage is mandatory prior to being assigned any regular season games. You may do as many scrimmages as you like. The first two scrimmages will be paid ($5/each). Any additional scrimmages you choose will be eligible for volunteer hours. Regular season games begin Saturday April 6th.

Program Overview Please Review your rulebooks in preparation for Meeting 2 Interesting new rules (for youth umpired divisions): RegVI(a) - A player who played catcher for 3 innings or less, moves to pitcher, and delivers 21 pitches or more in the same day, may not return to catcher on that calendar day. If the pitcher reaches the 20-pitch limit, the pitcher may finish the batter and maintain eligibility to return to catcher. RegVI(c) -  A player who delivers 41 or more pitches, and is not covered under the threshold exception, may not play catcher for the remainder of that day.

Program Overview Please Review your rulebooks in preparation for Meeting 2 Interesting new rules (for youth umpired divisions): SB 8.01(g) – A softball pitcher may step back with their pivot foot once their hands are together prior to starting the pitch. 8.02(a)(1) - The pitcher may bring the hand in contact with the mouth or lips while in the pitching circle provided he/she distinctly wipes off the pitching hand before contacting the ball.
