4 Why Latin? 2. Improve your knowledge of English Grammar.
Because Latin is so different from English (and French and Spanish), it forces students to learn about grammar abstractly, and this is perhaps the main reason Latin was once considered an indispensable discipline.

5 3. Gain knowledge of Roman mythology, history and daily life.
In the 1st year we cover: The Olympians The Trojan War and Aeneas Romulus and Remus The Seven Kings of Rome Founding of the Republic The major sites of Rome (Colosseum, Pantheon, Circus Maximus, etc.) Heroes of the Roman Republic (Cincinnatus, et al.) Roman housing, forums, aqueducts and amphitheaters And much, much more

6 Opportunities As with the other language programs, we offer:
Latin Club The Seal of Biliteracy AP Level classes The program also participates in the National Latin Exam (French also has something similar)

7 Opportunities There are also numerous voluntary opportunities for students to gain honors and recognitions, including: Certamen Club (like ‘knowledge-bowl’) The Memphis Fall Festivus The Junior Classical League State Convention The University of Memphis Language Fair (also Spanish) The National Mythology Exam The National Latin Vocabulary Exam The National Roman Civilization Exam The National Classical Etymology Exam

8 Pros and Cons of Taking Latin
The excellent foreign language programs at CHS offer the chance to become proficient in a second language Two years is not enough to learn a language Latin is the best investment for two years’ of language study

9 What to Expect The focus of Latin 1 is on acquiring the basics of Latin grammar. And when I say “grammar” … Students learn to read and write basic Latin sentences through repetitive practice. Being engaged in classroom work is therefore essential to success.
