4th 6 Weeks Vocabulary Word Wall

Cell Theory

Extract a substance made by extracting a part of a raw material, often by using a solvent such as ethanol or water.

Organ A group of tissues that perform a specific function or group of functions.

Organ System A group of organs that work together to carry out a particular task.

Organism a living things that contributes to the ecosystem.

Tissue a group of cells that perform a similar function

Cell Membrane membrane around cell: the membrane that surrounds the cytoplasm, through which substances pass in and out of the cell

Cell Wall the tough, usually flexible but sometimes fairly rigid layer that surrounds some types of cells.

Chloroplast organelles found in plant cells and other eukaryotic organisms that conduct photosynthesis.

Cytoplasm small gel-like substance residing between the cell membrane holding all the cell's internal sub-structures (called organelles), except for the nucleus.

Nucleus central part of living cell: the central body, usually spherical, within a eukaryotic cell, that is a membrane-encased mass of protoplasm containing the chromosomes and other genetic information necessary to control cell growth and reproduction

Mitochondria a small round or rod-shaped body that is found in the cytoplasm of most cells and produces enzymes for the metabolic conversion of food to energy

Organelle a specialized part of a cell that has its own function

Vacuole A small cavity in the cytoplasm of a cell, bound by a single membrane and containing water, food, or metabolic waste.

Radiant Energy Energy transferred by radiation, especially by an electromagnetic wave

Photosynthesis the process of converting light energy to chemical energy and storing it in the bonds of sugar.

External of or pertaining to the outside or outer part;

Fight or Flight A set of physiological changes, such as increases in heart rate, arterial blood pressure, and blood glucose, initiated by the sympathetic nervous system

Geotropism The growth of a living organism in response to gravity,

Hydrotropism movement influenced by water: movement by a plant part such as a root toward or away from a source of water

Phototropism the growth of a plant in the direction of its light source.

Response any behavior of a living organism that results from an external or internal stimulus.

Stimulus Something causing or regarded as causing a response

Thigmotropism a movement in which an organism moves or grows in response to touch or contact stimuli.

Equilibrium the condition of a system in which competing influences are balanced.

Homeostasis a state of equilibrium or a tendency to reach equilibrium, either metabolically within a cell or organism or socially and psychologically within an individual or group

Internal located inside: located within or affecting the inside of something, especially the inside of the body

Wilting droop or shrivel: to droop or shrivel through lack of water, too much heat, or disease, or make a plant droop or shrivel

Emergence The act or process of emerging

Turgor Pressure the main pressure of the cell contents against the cell wall in plant cells and bacteria cells
