1 Quiz next class Bell Ringer What is the latitude of a
Agenda *If you missed the test last class, you need to see me. *Bearing and Waypoints *Contour mapping practice Quiz next class Today's Workbook pages A/pgs 58, R/pgs 68,70-72 Research Class: Journal article #2 due 9/29. Get started! September 18-19, 2017 Bell Ringer What is the latitude of a point halfway between the North Pole and the Equator? On a map, what defines the symbols? On what type of map are latitude and longitude lines perpendicular to each other?

2 Describe: Lines of longitude and latitude are at right angles to
Mercator projection Describe: Lines of longitude and latitude are at right angles to each other Strength: All the countries are on one map, directions are easy to see Weakness: All areas away from the the equator are distorted Gnomonic projection Describe: map projection obtained by projecting points on the surface of sphere from a sphere's center to point in a plane Strength: show all great circles as straight lines, the shortest route between 2 places. Weakness: need multiple maps to see the entire world

3 Polyconic Projection Small size maps of a limited area, called quadrangle maps, made by placing a piece of paper shaped like a cone on to the globe and mapping parts that touch the paper. Describe: Strength: Weakness: Very accurate, can be very detailed. Only covers a small area, you need multiple maps to go very far.

4 Meridians/ Longitude lines 0-180 degrees
indicate distance in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian Parallels/ Latitude lines degrees indicate distance in degrees north or south of the Equator 1 degree = 6o minutes 1 minute = 60 seconds Reference points/lines Greenwich, England- Prime Meridian 0 degrees E or W longitude North Pole- 90 degrees North latitude South Pole- 90 degrees South latitude

5 Very accurate and usually very detailed.
Mercator Projection Description: Advantages: Disadvantages Very accurate and usually very detailed. Takes a lot of maps to cover much area Latitude lines are perpendicular to longitude lines Circular area is projected onto a flat plane True directions shown, whole world on one map Gnomic Projection Description: Advantages: Disadvantages Shows true directions and shortest distances as straight lines Sizes and shapes of land masses are distorted the further you go from the center point. Sizes & shapes of lands/oceans exaggerated as distance gets further from equator Polyconic Projection Description: Advantages: Disadvantages Small area map, cone of paper is laid on globe & portion that touches cone is mapped

6 Waypoints are used to store and remember locations that are of interest to the user.
Bearing is the direction to the destination or target.

7 2. What is the measure of the angle Y you drew?
How do I do this? X1. Start from north line at X, going in a clockwise direction, draw a curve line joining Y and X 2. What is the measure of the angle Y you drew? 180° is the measure of the angle. That was the easy one. For X to Y, since going from the North line at X to Y is a clockwise direction, you are going to need to do some math!

9 Measure the angle. Make sure you have 3 digits

11 line on a map connecting point of equal elevation.
every 5th contour, bold line, labeled with elevation difference in elevation between 2 consecutive contour lines lines that indicate a decrease in elevation, have hachures Contour lines never cross one another When contour line cross a stream, river or creek, they form a V that points upstream The first depression contour repeats the value of the previous downhill contour line.
