Look at these words: Cane Fist 1) Explore the connotations of the word 2) Explain how the word could be seen as brutal 3) Use the word in a sentence to make a brutal image Connotations – what this makes you think of; its associations

Authors intentionally use words to create specific effects on their audience. Now we will look at a more modern text. Highlight the words that you think the author chose to make this particularly brutal. Pick 3 and explain what effect they tried to create on the audience

Think back to the ‘The Carew Murder Case’, consider: How we are supposed to react The events and why they matter to the story How the author has made the scene seem brutal

Look at your picture page and select a quotation from the chapter that goes with each picture. Select one quotation and select its key words. Explain how they seem brutal and what effect they have on the audience.

Write a PEAL paragraph – ‘How has Stevenson made this scene seem brutal’? Remember to: discuss why Stevenson wanted it to be brutal; relate this to historical context; select and discuss key words of a quotation.
