2 The Narragansett People
Lived in wigwams Ruled by a Sachem Traded fur pelts for iron tools and brass kettles from the European settlers Got along well with the European settlers at first Began to mistrust the settlers when they took away part of the Narragansett’s land Formed the strongest organization called the Iroquois Confederacy

3 The Land of New Beginnings
Colonists protested when England passed unjust laws about paying taxes on items like tea A revolution began, and colonists declared their independence from England The new country had great leaders like George Washington, John Addams, and Benjamin Franklin The country’s first capital was in New York City, NY. It moved to Philadelphia, PA and finally to Washington, D.C. in 1800

4 A Land of Promise Immigrants came from other countries to live in the new United States Most immigrants came through the Port of New York at Ellis Island They came for jobs, to own land, to escape war and hardships, and to find a better life. Immigrants contributed much to our nation’s progress through their inventions and discoveries

5 Taking a Stand Abolitionists believed that slavery should be erased, or abolished Abolitionists , like Sojourner Truth, who were former slaves spoke out and told their story of what it was like to be a slave The 13th Amendment to the Constitution made slavery illegal Other reformers spoke in support of women’s rights In 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott organized the Seneca Falls Convention to let people speak out about women’s right to vote The 19th Amendment gives women the right to vote

6 Cities Grow and Change 3 Northeastern cities that began as ports where ocean –going ships docked are: New York City, NY; Boston, MA; and Philadelphia, PA Philadelphia, New York, and Boston all have famous landmarks for tourists to visit Pittsburgh, PA has industries that have changed over the years. They began as a “Steel City” and now have a diverse group of industries including high-tech, healthcare, and environmental research Northeastern cities are places of commerce where people work, shop, and spend money to help the economy
