2 Khan Mappers Khan mappers is a website that allows students to practice targeted math skills. The skills are determined by students scores on NWEA MAP test. Skills are scaffolded with hints and teaching videos according to student need. Students must demonstrate mastery in order to progress. Students earn badges and incentives as they complete skills. Teachers monitor student progress and an identify strengths and weaknesses. Not for profit organization - Funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Oracle, Bank of America, Leona Helmsley Charitable Trust, O’Sullivan Foundation Individual donators – Scott Cook (founder of Intuit) Reed Hastings (Netflix founder)

3 Advantages Independent and self paced
Differentiated - acceleration and intervention On demand feedback Students can only practices targeted skills. Fill in some learning gaps. Scaffolded with on demand hints and teaching videos. Rewards and incentives motivate students as they move through various skills. Access from any computer. Safe – students must access through MPS google domain. Free – No Ads

4 disadvantages Teaching to the test v. identifying needs
Can be used to replace the teacher Access Some students have trouble reading the questions Doesn’t address number sense Math without manipulatives Lacks authentic learning opportunities Low level questioning

7 Thematics In Corporate Schooling Meets Corporate Media, (Saltman, 2016, p. 107) Kenneth Saltman writes, “ …venture philanthropists ( a neoliberal reinvention of charity that evolved from the tech sector to use non-profits for promoting the privatization and corporation of the public sphere) have succeeded in strategically advancing privatization anad market-based school “reforms” to transform public education into a private industry while also hijacking public governance over educational policy. Leading venture philanthropists with deep pockets such as Gates, Walton and Broad have funded an infrastructure for school privatization and supporting national, regional and local organizations such as charter schools and voucher promotion...”

8 Thematics KhanAcademy smacks of the type of corporate school reform that “ involves transforming the culture of education by reeducating the public to accept education as a private consumable service, the teacher as a deskilled deliverer of knowledge rather than as an intellectual, and knowledge as a commodity to be consumed rather than a result of pedagogical exchange that centrally involves dialogue, curiousity, and dissent.” (Saltman, 2016, p. 108) In addition, Saltman addresses teaching to the test in his comments regarding corporations that profit from increased standardized testing and promotion of the CCSS. He writes, “media/technology corporations have contributed and profited from a radical remaking of public education in which constant testing, teaching to the tests, and efforts to standardize and align testable curriculum came to dominate the school day.” (Saltman, 2016, p. 108)

9 Thematics Students using Khan Academy are consuming and not producing knowledge. Gee (2013, p.208) writes that “ digital media should extend, supplement, complement, or augment deep real world experiences and interactions.” Gee continues to explain that authentic learning requires connections, goals and mentorship. As a digital resource Khan may be useful as part of a math curriculum that also incorporates building number sense and authentic math practice.
