6 TNC’s – A blessing or a curse?
They bring jobs to LEDC’s The wages from the TNC’s help the economy of LEDC’s TNC’s are richer and more powerful than many governments so they do what they want in LEDC’s TNC’s give people a variety of goods to choose from TNC’s can move profits from one country to another to avoid paying tax TNC’s often do not care about their workers and pay them low wages Conditions in TNC factories are often better than those in other factories in LEDC’s TNC’s move whenever they see a better deal elsewhere, closing down factories as they go The money TNC’s make goes back to their headquarters, rather than helping the country the goods are made in- this is called economic leakage TNC’s connect different countries together TNC’s bring new technology to LEDC’s TNC’s often pollute the air or water with toxic chemicals from their factories, they would not do this in their own country- this is because there are often weaker environmental laws in LEDCs LEDC’s find it difficult to develop their internal industry with all the competition from TNC’s L.O : To understand what TNC’s are and their role in Globalisation

7 Where do your jeans come from?
Designed in the USA by an American jeans company. Denim is made by cotton grown in Benin and woven and dyed in Italy with dye from Germany. The denim was sent to Tunisia by sea to be made into jeans. Where do your jeans come from? The zip was made in France by a Japanese company. Then to the UK via the channel tunnel and then taken by truck to London and put on sale. The softer cotton to line the pockets was grown and woven in Pakistan. The jeans were dyed pressed and sent to France by sea. The buttons are made from brass in Germany. They were stonewashed using lumps of pumice from an extinct volcano in Turkey. The polyester fiber was made in Japan from oil imported from Kuwait. Sewn together using different types of thread from UK, Hungary, Spain and Turkey.

12 Choice of task: decide which group you will be in
 Group 1 Meeting the trade unions! (Good for students with a liking for drama, acting, creative writing) Prepare a short play of about 5 minutes length to show the discussions between factory owners (3 people), factory workers like Jorna (3 people) and the Trade Union (2 people). Group 2 Campaign! (Good for students with a liking for current affairs, politics, public speaking) Prepare a presentation – in role – of about 5 minutes length to show how team of Factory Inspectors (4 people) might report on the conditions they found in the factory when they met the owners (4 people). The factory is the one you have seen in the programme. Group 3 Enquiry ! (Good for students with a liking for activity, finding out, face-to-face meeting with people) Design a questionnaire which you can ask the following groups of people about clothing, about factories in countries such as Bangladesh, and about Fair Trade. Group 4 Researchers! (Good for quieter students with a liking for research!) You are a reporter from the USA. You are writing a magazine article for the National geographic magazine to explain the causes and impacts of clothing manufacturing in Bangladesh.
