4 Understanding Fire Combustion: A rapid reaction between oxygen and a substance called a fuel Fuel: A material that releases energy when it burns. Wood, oil gasoline, natural gas, and paper The Fire Triangle: Three things are necessary to start and maintain a fire: Fuel Oxygen Heat Once started, a fire will burn as long as all three components of the fire triangle are available. If any of the three components are removed, the fire will die.

5 Home Fire Safety If you know how to prevent fires in your home and what to do if a fire starts, your are better prepared to take action. Most common sources: Small heaters Cooking Faulty electrical wiring Carelessness with cigarettes (the #1 cause of fire deaths) Fighting fires: Grease fires on the stove Fire extinguishers Prevention
