A noun that names one person, place, thing, or idea is a singular noun. A noun that names more than one person, place, thing, or idea is a plural noun. In most cases, you can change a singular noun to plural by adding –s. Singular: truck plant letter noise Jane Plural: trucks plants letters noises Janes

3 Many nouns do not become plural according to the regular rules.
Forming Plurals: Singular Ending Plural Form Example s ss ch sh X Z Add –es. Thomas-Thomases boss- bosses porch-porches bush- bushes fox- foxes waltz- waltzes Consonant + o (Some add only –s.) potato- potatoes veto- vetoes echo- echoes eskimo- eskimos solo- solos piano- pianos cello- cellos

4 Singular Ending Plural Form Example Vowel + o Add –s. radio- radios studio- studios Consonant + y Change y to I and add –es. baby- babies party- parties country- countries Vowel + y day- days turkey- turkeys F or fe Sometimes change f to v and add –s or –es. life- lives half- halves wolf- wolves roof- roofs chef- chefs

5 Some nouns have the same spelling in the singular and plural form.
moose- moose salmon- salmon fish- fish Other nouns are spelled differently in the plural form. child- children woman- women tooth- teeth man – men goose- geese mouse- mice

6 “Try It Out”: Circle the correct plural form.
The new (puppies, puppys) have sharp (tooths, teeth). The gardener weeded the berry (patchs, patches) and planted (tomatos, tomatoes). Loggers use (axes, axs) to cut (treeses, trees). The (moose, mooses) heard the (echos, echoes) of (wolves, wolfs). There are four (Bess, Besses) in the (classs, classes).
