1 Engaging students with additional support needs

2 What we’ll cover By the end of the session you will be able to:
recognise the particular barriers to engagement faced by students taught through separate provision: know of effective practice in student engagement; and identify what you can do as a student officer.

3 Terms you might hear Access 1 Extended learning support Profound and
complex needs Multiple impairments ASN DPG 18 Cognitive impairment

4 Why engage? Access and inclusion is an outcome of the Scottish Funding Council. One of five principles of Education Scotland. Important to involve a broad range of students. This group is often under-represented. Equality Duty requirement to consult stakeholders. Funding cuts.

5 Tools of engagement Feedback, questionnaires and surveys. Course reps.
Through the Students’ Association. Learning and Teaching meetings, committee meetings.

6 Group work In groups, think about what barriers students in supported provision might face when being engaged in the quality of their learning and teaching.

7 Solution planning In groups, take one of your barriers.
What could be done to remove this barrier: by you? by the students’ association? by your college?

8 Thank you. Any questions?
