2 How could this have contributed to WWI?
The Bosnian Crisis How could this have contributed to WWI? The Slavs wanted to be independent and were supported by the Russians. Austria hoped to control the Slavs. In 1908 Austria annexed Bosnia to try and take overt he Slavs. The Triple Entente called for an international conference, as Russia was in it. Austria refused. Germany was friendly with Turkey but decided to support Austria as they couldn’t risk this relationship. In 1909 Austria asked Germany to ask Russia to recognise the annexation. Russia agreed as they were weak from the Russo-Japanese war. Germany and Austria claimed victory and their alliance got stronger. The Triple Entente looked week. Russia and the other Slavic countries were embarrassed and determined to never back down again.

3 The Balkan Wars Serbia Lots of the smaller Balkan countries and areas joined together to attack Turkey in 1912, as they thought they could finally get rid of their influence whilst the Ottoman Empire was weak. The Balkan League won two battles. Then, another war broke out in 1913 between the Balkan Countries and Turkey. Eventually an agreement was reached... Turkey lost all of its European countries to the Balkan League as the Russians supported the Balkan League Serbia was disgruntled as they wanted access to the sea but Austria has stopped them from getting it by granting the land to someone else. Austria was worried that Serbia was getting too powerful with Russia’s support. The Serbs crossed into Albania (the Austrian supported state) to try and get access to the sea. Germany promised Austria they would support them if Austria attacked Serbia. On this occasion the Serbians withdrew. Albania

7 Focusing on question exercise
Work in these groups/pairs – Roua, Guled and Timur, Assay and Legjende, Hamid and Dina. Pick an a-type question and write it down. Underline the key words. Write a list of facts you could include which will help you answer it. Write a list of phrases which will help you answer the question at the beginning, middle and end of paragraphs. Weltpolitik shaped German domestic policy from Do you agree? Germany wanted European hegemony by Do you agree? Germany was plagued by economic and social divisions which shook the country to its very core from Do you agree? Germany was remarkably politically united from Do you agree? Democracy strengthened in Germany from 1900 to Do you agree? Germany failed to politically and socially modernise from 1900 to Do you agree?

The Kaiser was a destabilising influence in Germany from 1900 to Do you agree? Moltke and the Kaiser should have been put on trial and found guilty for inciting warfare during peacetime in Do you agree? Can anyone think of their own statements to debate?

9 Homework – due Monday 24th November
Research the steps to the outbreak of World War One. Summarise them in 5 steps. Return to your A3 sheet on historiographical interpretations and add knowledge using German war plans, Bosnian War, Balkan wars, The first and second Moroccan Crisis, Anglo-German relations
