2 Amendment Review I will show some scenarios. Your goal is to guess the correct Amendment that is being violated or broken.

3 #1 Bernie lives in the South after the Civil War. As he is trying to leave the plantation where he used to be a slave, his plantation owner Billy Bob stops him and says, “I paid for you, you are my slave, you must stay!” What Amendment is Billy Bob breaking?

4 Answer 13th!!! Billy Bob can not tell anyone to be a slave! Slavery became unconstitutional with the 13th Amendment!!

5 #2 An elderly man named Larry walks up to the voting booth. Betty, the person that works at the voting place says, “Go away old man, you can’t vote here!” What Amendment is Betty breaking?

6 Answer 15th Amendment! According to the 15th Amendment, all men have the right to vote no matter of age or race!

7 #3 A man decides that he needs people to work at a factory, but he can’t pay them. He decides to force his employees to work without paying them a single dollar. What amendment is the man breaking?

8 Answer The 13th Amendment - The man cannot force people to work for free!

9 #4 Josue and his wife Erika are from Honduras. After their honeymoon, they moved to Memphis and they had a beautiful baby girl named Gizelle. Gizelle was not accepted into a daycare center because the school said only U.S. citizens can attend. What amendment did the school violate?

10 Answer The 14th Amendment says anyone born in the U.S. is a U.S. citizen

The South was destroyed by the Civil War. Cities were burned down. Plantations were destroyed by all of the fighting.

16 Ex-Slaves The Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment gave the slaves their freedom!

17 The Slaves are Free! Did the slaves now have homes?
Yay! The slaves are free! However.... Did the slaves now have homes? Did the slaves now have a job? Did the slaves now have a way to get medicine if they are sick?

18 The Ex-Slaves Did the slaves have any of those things? NO!

19 So what would you do if you were part of the U. S
So what would you do if you were part of the U.S. Government and in charge of solving this problem?

20 The Freedman’s Bureau President of the United States Abraham Lincoln and Congress decided to help the freed slaves by setting up the Freedmen’s Bureau.

23 Freedman’s Bureau The Freedmen’s Bureau was a government organization set up to help freed slaves get an education, job, healthcare, and the skills needed to start a new life!

24 Freedman’s Bureau The Freedmen’s Bureau main purpose was to help former slaves.

25 Freedman’s Bureau The Freedmen’s Bureau was part of Reconstruction.
Reconstruction was the rebuilding of the South after the Civil War!

26 Freedman’s Bureau - Healthcare
The Freedmen’s Bureau tried to set up new hospitals and clinics to help those people that were sick. Many former slaves needed a doctor because they went their entire lives without getting any medicine for bad health problems.

28 Jobs The Freedmen’s Bureau also helped former slaves get jobs.
Former slaves did not have jobs because they were now free from their plantations. They needed jobs to support their families!

31 Education The Freemen’s Bureau also helped build schools for African Americans and former slaves. These schools were very important because a lot of African Americans did not know how to read, or do any math!
