Cities were burned down.
Plantations were destroyed by all of the fighting.

The Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment gave the slaves their freedom!

Yay! The slaves are free!

President of the United States Abraham Lincoln and Congress decided to help the freed slaves by setting up the Freedmen’s Bureau.

The Freedmen’s Bureau was a government organization set up to help freed slaves get an education, job, healthcare, and the skills needed to start a new life!

The Freedmen’s Bureau main purpose was to help former slaves.

Reconstruction was the rebuilding of the South after the Civil War!

The Freedmen’s Bureau tried to set up new hospitals and clinics to help those people that were sick.
Many former slaves needed a doctor because they went their entire lives without getting any medicine for bad health problems.

Former slaves did not have jobs because they were now free from their plantations.
They needed jobs to support their families!
