Figure 1 | Chronic inflammation and DNA damage in people with SLE. In an inflammatory environment, proinflammatory immune cells and cytokines produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), which cause DNA damage in nearby cells. These reactive species can also modify key residues on various DNA repair proteins, inhibiting damage repair. Furthermore, NFκB can cause increased expression of activation-induced cytidine deaminase (AID), which causes DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs).
