4 MATTER Look around the classroom.  Everything, from the clothes you are wearing to the air you breath is matter. 

5 MATTER Matter makes up everything including living things like plants and people.  It also makes non-living things such as tables and chairs.

6 MATTER Things as big as an elephant or as tiny as a grain of sand on a beach are matter.

7 General properties Mass is a general property of matter that is the amount of matter it an object. It is the amount of “stuff” there is. It is easy to confuse the terms “mass” with “weight” but they are fundamentally different properties. The mass of an object does not change from place to place. The weight of an object is determined by the force of the pull of gravity on the object. Technically speaking, weight is a force.

8 General properties Volume – Volume describes how much space matter occupies. For measuring the volume of liquid instruments we can use, among others things, a beaker, a graduated cylinder, a  pipette. For measuring the volume of an irregular solid, we can use the method of immersion in water. Thus ,the volume of the solid will be the difference between the final volume, which is measured when the object is within a test tube, less the initial volume. For measuring the volume of a solid geometric we usually use mathematical formulas.

9 Specific property DENSITY is a physical property of matter, as each element and compound has a unique density associated with it. DENSITY does not depend on the quantity of matter, only on the nature of the substance
