1 Pre-AP English II January 18, 2018
In your journal, answer one of the following questions: IF you could move anywhere in the world for just one year, where would you go? Why? What sorts of qualities make for a good friend. Explain your reasons.

2 Announcements Friday: 10th grade is doing MAP testing all morning. We will let you know where you need to report. You will be there through tutorials, and then you will go to your afternoon classes. No Membean this week.

3 The Great Gatsby – Chapter 1
In chapter 1we focus on point of view and character development. What did you learn in chapter 1 about the following characters: Nick, Tom, Jordan, Daisy. How dose Nick’s role differ from that of the other characters? How will this affect how you get to know the other characters from here on out? Do you think Nick will be a reliable narrator? Provide evidence from the chapter to support your opinion. What assumptions can you make about each one of these characters based on what you learned about them in chapter 1? Provide a quote or passage from the chapter as evidence. How might each of the characters’ viewpoints of themselves differ from your own viewpoint of them? Why might they differ? Based on what you know about the characters now, how do you think the situation brewing between all of them will progress further in the novel? Do you have any predictions for one or more of the characters? What reasons do you have for your predictions? Refer to words, phrases, descriptions, etc., from chapter 1 to support your predictions. What is your impression of Nick’s neighbor, the one who reaches toward the green light across the water? Might this be a symbol for something? Without researching the green light and its meanings, what do you suppose its purpose may be for this mysterious man?

4 The Great Gatsby – Chapter 2
In chapter 2 we focus on setting, symbolism, and social class. Make a list of all of the places mentioned in chapter 2, focusing especially upon those which the narrator spends a good deal of time describing. Add to each a list of words and phrases the narrator uses to describe these places. Pay attention to imagery. Based on your collection of words and phrases, how would you interpret these places? How do they provide a fitting backdrop for the characters that abide there (compare the characters to the world in which they live)? How do they provide a fitting backdrop for the characters just passing through or visiting (compare and contrast)? Describe Myrtle and George Wilson, separately and as a couple. How would you evaluate their relationship? What, do you assume, is at the heart of Myrtle’s treatment of her husband? Find phrases from the chapter to support your assumptions. What more do you learn about Tom? How does this affect your view of him? Is there anything you find sympathetic about him? What do you think are his motivations for his actions as described in chapter 2? Does he have an excuse for his actions?

5 The Great Gatsby – Essential Questions
Chapters 1 & 2 Essential Questions Chapter 1 – To what extent are characters disillusioned or unsatisfied with their lives (e.g. their relationships, employment, social status, wealth, families, personal histories, etc.)? Chapter 2 – How do Fitzgerald’s descriptions of setting and geography influence our understanding of character motivations and conflicts?
