Be sure to line up the decimal points carefully and check your work to catch any mistakes. Although the textbook shows subtraction of decimals on one line (-9.7 – 4.5) Students may find it easier to stack the numbers vertically with the decimals points lined up properly.
To solve one-step equations, use inverse operations and the properties of equality to get the variable alone on one side of the equation.

In lesson 2.5, students learned to solve equations by adding or subtracting.
In this lesson, they extend this to solving equations with decimals.
In lesson 3-6, they will solve equations by multiplying or dividing decimals.
