1 Conjunctions

2 Definition: A coordinating conjunction is a joining word that links equal parts within a sentence Example: The snow and rain hit hard today. the word “and” joins snow and rain (2 nouns)

3 There are 7 coordinating conjunctions:
F for A and N nor B but O or Y yet S so

4 Remember… Coordinating conjunctions join equal parts in a sentence
Example: Tom and Laura ate lunch together. “and” joins two proper nouns, Tom and Laura

5 Coordinating conjunctions can join compound verbs:
The hockey players wrestled and fought. Conjunction “and” joins 2 verbs

6 They can join two adjectives or adverbs:
The cat was fat yet speedy. The conjunction “yet” joins 2 adjectives The skier raced aggressively but cautiously. The conjunction “but” joins 2 adverbs

7 Coordinating conjunctions can join two or more prepositional phrases:
Jenna rode her horse (across the meadow) and (past the stream). The conjunction “and” joins 2 prepositional phrases

8 Tom shut the door for the blizzard was coming.
And, of course, coordinating conjunctions can join two or more complete sentences (clauses): Tom shut the door for the blizzard was coming. The conjunction “for” joins 2 complete sentences

9 Practice with Conjunctions:

14 6. Her favourite fruits are strawberries and bananas.
What is the conjunction? “for” What 2 things are being joined? 2 complete sentences

15 7. The snowboarder practiced but lost in the competition
Conjunction: but Joins: practiced and lost 2 verbs

17 The two friends decided to go to either “New Moon” or “A Christmas Story” on Friday night.
