Aim: How did Stalin transform the Soviet Union into a totalitarian state? Do Now: Imagine what it would be like to not have the freedom to choose… The only place you could buy food from – Trader Joe’s The only place you could buy clothes from – Old Navy The only place you could speak freely – Nowhere Which freedom would you miss the most?

6 Method used by Stalin How did Stalin’s use of this method transform the Soviet Union into a totalitarian state? Police State People were intimidated. Opposition was squashed. * In 1937 – 1938 Stalin directed a campaign of terror called the Great Purge. Stalin had anyone who threatened his power executed. It is estimated that 8-13 million people were killed. Propaganda and Censorship People received a biased viewpoint (Stalin and the Communist Party were glorified). Those who expressed disagreement or dissent were arrested. Education and Indoctrination Children were brainwashed from a young age so they would grow up to be good Communists. Religious Persecution Places of worship were destroyed. * Stalin did not want the people to venerate a higher being, he wanted the people to venerate him.
