1 The Growth of a Young Nation 1800-1850

2 In 1803 The Louisiana Purchase doubled the USA’s territory
Britain’s impressments of Americans led to the War of 1812 and Britain burned down the White House Russia, Spain and Portugal wanted to claim lands in the western hemisphere In 1823 The USA’s Monroe Doctrine warned countries to not expand in the Western Hemisphere

3 Northern factories thrived and agriculture remained in the South (including slavery)
The Indian Removal Act forced Natives off their lands and thousands died in the Trail of Tears in 1832 Many Americans believed in Manifest Destiny meaning they were “destined” to expand westward and used different trails to settle west White Americans settled in Texas (Mexico) and soon declared independence in 1835

4 In 1835 Mexican troops killed 187 Anglos at the Texas Alamo
More border disputes lead to the Mexican American War in and the USA won USA annexed (took) half of Mexico’s land including California and the Southwest The California Gold Rush of 1849 lead to a population boom in the San Francisco Bay Area

5 The Textile Mills (factories) in the North gave females jobs/salaries but in harsh conditions
Women striked but lost most of the time and soon several industrial workers formed Unions The Second Great Awakening and Women Rights Movements began fighting for equality Abolition Movements (anti-slavery) began pushing to outlaw slavery with leaders such as Frederick Douglas
