1   UCA History The United Church of Auburn has roots that go back to the founding of our country.  Information provided by  Bob Dunn, Betty Nash, Esther Loomis and Larry Bell and "The First Baptist Church, 175 Genesee Street, Auburn, NY" (Published on the occasion of the church's sesquicentennial in 1973.) First Baptist Church 1796 First Baptist Church erected on Bluefield Road in the town of Fleming.  Elder David Irish, Pastor. This was the first church erected in Fleming and the second in Cayuga County. 1817 A group of Baptists met at the home of James Randall and formed the Auburn Baptist Conference (ABC). Disciples of Christ 1836 In an old book in a church in Throopsville: "The Baptist Church records with sorrow the growing dissatisfaction among its members who were led astray by tracts written by one A. Campbell."

2   UCA History The United Church of Auburn has roots that go back to the founding of our country.  Information provided by  Bob Dunn, Betty Nash, Esther Loomis and Larry Bell and "The First Baptist Church, 175 Genesee Street, Auburn, NY" (Published on the occasion of the church's sesquicentennial in 1973.) 1819 A delegation of Auburn churches met at the Auburn Courthouse and recognized the ABC as a "church in gospel order."  Membership 36. 1820 The church called its first pastor, Rev. Cornelius P. Wyckoff.  First sermon preached at Auburn Court House. 1825 The first building erected at the intersection of  South and Exchange Streets.  The brick structure cost $15,000. 1827 At the recommendation of the Cayuga Association, the church decides to begin Sunday School classes. June 12, 1836 100 church members met in Auburn and formed their own church:  The Congregation of the Disciples of the Lord Jesus. The congregation returned to Throopsville and met in the old select school house.  First resident pastor was Silas Sheppard.  The Congregation of the Disciples of the Lord Jesus built and moved into a wooden building 37' by 50' on Division Street in Clarksville (towns of Auburn and Aurelius).  New name:  First Church of Christ Disciples.

Rapid growth in the congregation made necessary the construction of a new building. In 1833, the building at South and Exchange was sold to the Universalist Society. A new church made of plain stone and measuring 60' by 80' was built on Genesee Street at a site formerly occupied by Traub's Furniture  Store. The building cost $33,000 and was dedicated on February 15, 1834. 1883 Property at the corner of Genesee and James Streets purchased for $18,000. 1884 Cornerstone of the new building was laid. 1890's A new brick building was built on the site of the wooden building.  The Ladies Aid Group paid $3.000 of the $11,000 needed to build the new church. 1905 The congregation built a new parsonage. 1909 Membership was 405.  Largest Sunday School attendance was 375. 1913 The congregation called Reverend Edgar W. Allen to be pastor. 1916 Differences divided the church.

4   UCA History The United Church of Auburn has roots that go back to the founding of our country.  Information provided by  Bob Dunn, Betty Nash, Esther Loomis and Larry Bell and "The First Baptist Church, 175 Genesee Street, Auburn, NY" (Published on the occasion of the church's sesquicentennial in 1973.) 1885 Building 80' by 134' was completed.  Cost was $70,000. 1900 Church membership was 680. 1916 Electricity introduced. 1924 First Deaconesses were elected.  Duties were to "care for the communion service, prepare the elements and perform other duties assigned to them." 1932 The Church purchased the house next to the church at 177 Genesee Street.  This eventually became the parsonage. 1917 156 members formed the Central Church of Christ led by Reverend Allen. The new congregation bought a building on Genesee Street near the Seymour Library. First Church of Christ Disciples became First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  1960's The brick church on Division Street belonging to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) needed extensive repairs.  Also, the congregation needed parking space and room to expand.   The First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Central Church agreed to unite and build a new church. Construction of a new church on Metcalf Drive began. Pastor Reverend John Leeper

5   UCA History The United Church of Auburn has roots that go back to the founding of our country.  Information provided by  Bob Dunn, Betty Nash, Esther Loomis and Larry Bell and "The First Baptist Church, 175 Genesee Street, Auburn, NY" (Published on the occasion of the church's sesquicentennial in 1973.) 1935 50th anniversary celebration:  Choir loft enlarged, organ rebuilt, and platform extended and carpeted.  Mary Chappal, who was organist in the 1800's,  gave a recital on the newly rebuilt organ. First Baptist Church Choir, 1946 1959 75th anniversary celebration:  Banquet with special music and guests. Mrs. Adelaide B. Meade prepared a special anniversary booklet, "A Guided Tour of First Baptist Church." 1968 New church:  Lake Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). February first service in the new building. May--dedication of the new building. Many items in the new church came from both former congregations. Central Church:  pews, sanctuary lights, lecterns and communion table. First Christian Church:  stained-glass rose window at the front of the sanctuary. 1970's First Baptist Church on the corner of Genesee and James had serious structural damage. Lake Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) offered First Baptist Church use of the Metcalf Drive church building.

6   UCA History The United Church of Auburn has roots that go back to the founding of our country.  Information provided by  Bob Dunn, Betty Nash, Esther Loomis and Larry Bell and "The First Baptist Church, 175 Genesee Street, Auburn, NY" (Published on the occasion of the church's sesquicentennial in 1973.) 1970's 1973 Sesquicentennial  celebration. Also in the early 70's, organ overhauled, new sanctuary lights installed and dedicated. Church needed $200,000 in repairs. The congregation voted to demolish the building. 1980  First Baptist Church and Lake Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) joined to form the United Church of Auburn.    1980 Lake Avenue Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and First Baptist Church of Auburn joined to form the United Church of Auburn.
