2 Ballad A fairly short narrative poem written in a song like stanza form.

3 Couplet A pair of rhymed lines

4 Free Verse Poetry written in free verse is arranged in lines, may be more or less rhythmical, but has no fixed metrical pattern or expectation.

5 Lyric Poetry Poetry with a lyrical or song-like quality.

6 Narrative Poetry A poem that tells a story.

7 Quatrain A four line stanza poem.

8 Sonnet Type of lyric poetry; fourteen lines.

9 Stanza A group of poetic lines that form a unit (a poem’s paragraph)

10 Poetry Terms It is time for rhyme!!

11 End Rhyme Occurring at the end of two or more lines of verse.

12 Extended Rhyme The addition of extra phrases to the rhythm of the song to delay an anticipated second rhyme.

13 Internal Rhyme Rhyming that occurs within the line rather than at the end.

14 Rhyme A pattern of words that contains a similar sounds at the end of the line.

15 Rhyme Scheme A repeated pattern of rhymed words at the end of the line.

16 Rhythm Internal feel of beat and meter perceived when poetry is read aloud.

17 Iambic Pentameter Let’s break it down: Feet= groups of syllables
Meter= pattern of syllables in a line of poetry Iambic= type of foot with one unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable Penta= five Iambic Pentameter= a line with 5 feet (pairs) of stressed and unstressed syllables
