1 Copyright ... Good or Bad? Educational Applications of Technology
EDUC 5306, Dr. Burris Alexandra Woodfork

2 What is Copyright? A form of protection provided by the laws of the United States to the creators of “original works,” including literary works, movies, sound recordings, paintings, photographs, software, live performances and television or sound broadcasts.

3 The Copyright Act Gives the owner of copyright the exclusive right to:
Reproduce the work Prepare other works based upon the work Distribute copies of the work by sale or other transfer of ownership; or by lease Perform the work publicly Display the copyrighted work publicly

4 Copyright Infringement
The use of works protected by “copyright law” without permission. The copyright holder is the work’s creator or publisher to whom the copyright has been assigned. You must obtain certain “exclusive rights” from the copyright holder to reproduce, distribute or display their protected work.

5 The Copyright Law This law of the United States encourages the creation of art and culture by rewarding those specific authors and artists with a set of exclusive rights. These exclusive rights are subject to a time limit and usually expire 70 years after the authors or artists death.

6 What is “Fair Use”? Fair Use is the limitation and/or exception to the exclusive right granted by copyright law to the author of a creative piece of work. In the United States, this “fair use” doctrine permits limited use of copyrighted material without acquiring permission from the right’s holder. Some examples of “fair use” are: search engines, criticism, news reporting, research and various others. When downloading any of the above mentioned without consent of the copyright owner may be subject to disciplinary / legal action by the copyright holder.

7 STOP! Infringement in the Classroom
It is important that students create products and projects from their own work. Whether it’s a poem, short story or drawing, students automatically own copyright to it. As the creator of their work, students should feel proud and have complete control of what others do with it. It is important that we respect each others work because it shows our appreciation for all the hard work it takes to create “original works”.
