1 Body Systems Notes

2 Body System Notes We will be learning about 8 different body systems. Many of these systems work together for a similar function. Please use this information to work on your project.

3 Major Parts Bones  Joints Ligaments Cartilage Skeletal System

4 Skeletal System Structure (What is is) Bones have a hard outer layer.
Bones attach to each other through ligaments and joints Bones attach to muscles through tendons. Skeletal System

5 Skeletal System Function (What it does) Protection Movement Storage
Support Red blood cell production Skeletal System

6 Muscular System Major Parts Skeletal Muscle Smooth Muscle
Cardiac Muscle Muscular System

7 Muscular System Structure (What is is) Involuntary and voluntary
Fibrous Tissue Muscular System

8 Muscular System Function (What it does) Used for movement
Skeletal muscle can be controlled, smooth and cardiac muscle cannot. Muscular System

9 How do these two systems interact (useful for your project)
Major Parts for Skeletal System Bone -Cartilage -Ligaments Joints Major Parts for Muscular System Skeletal Muscle -Smooth Muscle -Cardiac Muscle How do these two systems interact (useful for your project)

10 Cardiovascular/ Circulatory System
Major Parts Heart Blood Blood vessels (Lymphatic System) Cardiovascular/ Circulatory System

11 Cardiovascular/ Circulatory System
Structure (What it is) Heart is a muscle in constant motion Blood transports oxygen, hemoglobin, hormones and nutrients Vessels lined with smooth muscle Cardiovascular/ Circulatory System

12 Cardiovascular/ Circulatory System
Function (What it does) Heart pumps blood through veins Delivers oxygen from lungs through hemoglobin in red blood cells Maintains homeostasis Cardiovascular/ Circulatory System

13 Cardiovascular/ Circulatory System
Notes (on left side of notebook, if you’ve run out of room, turn the page and still use the left side.) Heart-cardiac muscle, right side pumps oxygen poor blood to the lungs. Left side pumps oxygen-rich blood to the body. Made up of four chambers, valves cause “lub-dub” sound. Blood- connective tissue, serves as a transport system through miles of vessels in the body Blood vessels- 3 kinds. Artery-> carries blood away from the heart. Capillary->Tiny blood vessel exchanges between body cells and blood. Vein->carries blood back to the heart. Cardiovascular/ Circulatory System

14 Major Parts Nose Larynx Trachea Bronchioles Alveoli Respiratory System

15 Structure (What it is) Respiratory System
Air travels from nose and mouth through tubes Lungs are like balloons Alveoli are tiny sacs Respiratory System

16 Function (What it does)
Takes in Oxygen for blood Releases waste in the form of Carbon Dioxide Respiratory System

17 Oxygen travels from the nose/ mouth to the pharynx, the larynx, trachea, bronchioles, and alveoli.
The alveoli are tiny sacs that diffuse oxygen into blood vessels located there. Respiratory System

18 How to keep the systems healthy

19 Lung health

20 Interaction

21 Digestive System Major Parts: Mouth Esophagus Stomach Small Intestine
Large Intestine Rectum Anus Digestive System

22 Digestive System Structure (What it is) Teeth and saliva in the mouth
Esophagus: muscle tube Stomach: muscular organ Intestines: smooth muscle tissues Rectum and anus are at the end of the system for feces Digestive System

23 Digestive System Function (What it does)
Mechanical Digestion (chewing) Chemical Digestion (saliva, acid, and enzymes) Breaks down food into basic nutrients Package unused digestive wastes Digestive System

24 Digestive System Additional Notes:
-Mechanical and chemical digestion happens in the mouth. Food travels down the esophagus to the stomach. -The stomach is full of acids and enzymes. Intestines absorb water and nutrients for energy…and make poop. Digestive System

25 November 12th new due date, things need to be ready that day, presentations to come in days after.
Project Due Date

26 Excretory System Major Parts: Skin (largest organ) Kidneys Bladder
Lungs Excretory System

27 Excretory System Structure (What it is) Skin has sweat glands
Kidneys filter Bladder: muscular and elastic Lungs deflate Excretory System

28 Excretory Systems Function (What it does) Regulates body temperature
Filters food and water Excretes waste Excretory Systems

29 Excretory System Additional Notes:
Sweat glands in skin regulate body temperature. Kidneys and bladder excrete waste. Lungs exhale CO2 Excretory System

32 Me: Immune system, why do I have a fever?
Immune System: Well, the bacteria can’t survive outside 100 degrees for long so I thought I’d raise the temperature to kill them off! Me: Immune system: Immune System: Me: We also can’t survive outside 100 degrees for long.
