Arizona From Territory to State

2 Acquiring Land 1848- Land was acquired in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Many settlers moved there during the Gold Rush The rest was purchased in the Gadsden Purchase in 1853

3 AZ Territory During the Civil War, Arizona southerners made Arizona a Confederate territory. 1863- Lincoln okayed the making of Arizona from New Mexico’s land Capitol was in Prescott, and then later moved to Tucson 1889- The capital moved to Phoenix

5 Miners Most modern day cities were created by miners in the Civil War era Immigrant miners set up trading posts in towns like Bisbee, Wickenburg, and Globe They mined gold, silver, and copper. Railroads made life easier in the 1880s. Mining towns had large populations and violence.

6 Founders Nellie Cashman- the “Angel of Tombstone” fed hungry miners
Sharlot Hall- first territorial historian Charles Poston- the “Father of Arizona” convinced Congress to admit AZ as a territory. John Swilling- founded an irrigation company and Phoenix

8 Constitutional Convention
1910 congress allowed AZ to hold a Constitutional Convention Constitution was approved except the power to recall judges. AZ removed the recall to get the Constitution passed

9 Statehood Feb. 14, 1912 Arizona became the 48th state
George Hunt was the first Governor Voters immediately voted to add the recall back into the Constitution
