5 1862 – Civil War In Arizona – Battle of Picacho at Picacho Peak, AZ Battle between the Union cavalry patrol from California and a party of Confederate pickets from Tucson.

6 February 24, 1863 – Arizona becomes Territory (separate from New Mexico) Charles D. Poston, the “Father of Arizona” Goes to Washington D.C. to interest President Lincoln in making Arizona a territory. Became Delegate in 1864 Chino Valley, capital

7 Capital moves 1864 – moves from Chino Valley to Prescott 1867 – moves to Tucson 1877 – moves to Prescott 1889 – moves to Phoenix for last time

8 Arizona Territory Officials 1863 – 1866; 1 st Governor, John N. Goodwin Became Arizona’s Delegate to the U.S. Congress in 1866-67 He submitted several bills for military aid to fight hostile Indians and establish postal routes Appointed by Pres. Lincoln

9 Arizona Territory Officials Secretary Richard C. McCormick Became Second Governor in 1866 Became Delegate in 1869 Appointed by Pres. Lincoln Traveled with Goodwin Started first 2 newspapers of Arizona Asked for Troops to help tame the Apaches.

10 Arizona Territory Officials In 1869, Anson P.K. Safford became 3 rd Governor. He started the public school system, giving him the title of “Father of the Arizona Public Schools” Developed Volunteer troops to fight hostile Indians and Mexican outlaws. Made highway robberies a capital offense and built the Yuma Territorial Prison.

13 1880 Southern Pacific Railroad is completed across Arizona Yuma, Arizona … bridge for the Railroad

14 1881 - 1 st Territorial Fair, Phoenix

15 1886 – Indian Wars end. Geronimo and Apaches surrender It took 5,000 troops to capture Geronimo They paraded him around various Wild West Shows Geronimo ended his days as a prisoner of war in Oklahoma dying from pneumonia at the age of 79.

16 1891 – First university class At the University of Arizona “The University of Arizona came into being in a time when college education was neither common nor a high priority. Classes met for the first time in 1891 with 32 students and six teachers. The first two colleges, Agriculture and Mines, held classes in the university's only building -- Old Main -- which is still in use today “

17 1902 – Plans for statehood New Mexico became a state January 6, 1912

18 1910 – Convention held in Arizona The Arizona State Constitution was drafted and ratified during the Constitutional Convention of 1910.

19 1912 – February 14 th Arizona is admitted as the 48 th state! President Taft signed the bill.

20 Arizona State’s 1 st Governor George W. P. Hunt is elected first governor.
