1 ACTIVITY 3 Bat Masks Explain to your students that they will be learning about how bats’ characteristic(s) are an adaptation to obtaining food

2 Help students understand the association between the bats’ characteristic(s) and their diet:
Top left: Insectivorous bats have large ears for listening to insects crawling or flying Top right: Nectivorous bats have  a long snout & tongue for drinking nectar from flowers Bottom left: Vampire bats have fangs for making cuts on an animal's skin Bottom right: Big eyes are associated with bats who eat fruit; “big eyes help them see colorful fruit better” Hand out Bat Masks Assign four corners in the room as each category: Large ears(insect bats), long snout(nectar bats), big eyes(fruit bats), fangs(vampire bats) Allow students to color and cut out masks, then ask students to walk over to the group which they think they belong to based on their assigned characteristic/masks [guide them if they go to the wrong group]

3 Number of species Insects Fruit Nectar Blood Project on board
Collect data: Have students place an X above the diet of their bat mask Data will be based on the number of species of bats that eat insects, fruit, nectar and blood (number of bat masks per diet) Insects Fruit Nectar Blood
