4 The Endocrine System 1. The endocrine system is composed of various glands. Each gland secretes hormones. What is a hormone?

5 The Endocrine System The endocrine system is composed of various glands. Each gland secretes hormones. What is a hormone? Chemical messengers released into the blood stream. They act on specific target cells that have receptors for the specific signal molecule.

17 The Endocrine System and Feedback Loops
The endocrine system functions to maintain homeostasis by secreting hormones. Feedback loops are a large part of the process. Feedback is a situation when the response of a loop impacts or influences the input or stimulus. Look at the two examples of feedback loops. What is the difference between a positive feedback loop and a negative feedback loop?

18 Positive Feedback Loop

19 Negative Feedback Loops

20 The Endocrine System and Feedback Loops
What is the difference between a positive feedback loop and a negative feedback loop? Positive: increases the reaction in the same direction as initiation event (i.e. pregnancy, breastfeeding) Negative: reaction is opposite of initiation event (i.e. blood glucose levels) Research a feedback loop of the endocrine system and draw it on the table. Send a picture of your work to On your paper, explain it in your own words.
