GOLGOTHA = The Place of the Skull
ca. 1953 ca. 2017

GOLGOTHA "They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). --Matthew 27:33, NIV "So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. 17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.” --John 19:16b-18, NIV

MARK 16:1-3 (NIV) When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”

MARK 16:4-6 (NIV) 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.”

MARK 16:7-8 (NIV) 7 “But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.’” 8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

KEY VERSE – MARK 16:6 (NIV) “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.”

1. HE LIVES “Our old history ends with the cross; our new history begins with the resurrection.” Watchman Nee ( ), Chinese Church Planter “Jesus Christ did not come into this world to make bad people good; He came into this world to make dead people live.” Lee Strobel (1952), The Case for Christ

LUKE 24:4-7 4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. 5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? 6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”

JOHN 20:26-27 (NIV) 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

JOHN 20:28-31 (NIV) 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” 30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

2. BECAUSE HE LIVES…WE LIVE
“It ought to be placed in the forefront of all Christian teaching that Christ’s mission on earth was to give men Life. I am come, He said, that ye might have Life, and that ye might have it more abundantly. And that He meant literal Life, literal spiritual and Eternal Life, is clear from the whole course of His teaching and acting.” –Henry Drummond ( ), Scottish Evangelist & Teacher

JOHN 10:9-11 (NIV) “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full  I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

JOHN 11:25-27 (NIV) 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” 27 “Yes, Lord,” she (Martha) replied, “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.”

ROMANS 10:9-10, 13 (NIV) 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

3. BECAUSE HE LIVES… WE LIVE WITH JESUS FOREVER
“Sin’s masterpiece of shame and hate became God’s masterpiece of mercy and forgiveness. Through the death of Christ upon the cross, sin itself was crucified for those who believe in Him. The resurrection of Christ changed the midnight of bereavement into a sunrise of reunion; it changed the midnight of disappointment into a sunrise of joy; it changed the midnight of fear to a sunrise of peace.” – Billy Graham ( )

JOHN 14:1-4 (NIV) “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

ACTS 1:10-11 (CSB) 10 While he (Jesus) was going, they were gazing into heaven, and suddenly two men in white clothes stood by them. 11 They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up into heaven? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come in the same way that you have seen him going into heaven.”

REVELATION 21:3-5 (NIV) 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

APPLICATIONS The Resurrection CONFIRMS that God always keeps His promises. The Resurrection DEFEATED the strongholds of Satan, Sin and Self-Sufficiency. The Resurrection PROVIDES every person on this planet the opportunity to experience eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ.

A PRAYER TO CONSIDER "Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is my Creator and Redeemer. I believe that He died for my sin and that you raised Him to life. I want to trust Him as my Savior and follow Him as Lord, from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. I pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen."
