2 Big Local = resident led regeneration (No really, it is, really………………)
No-one applied – based on need and fairness Partnership board must be at least 51% (is actually 75%) Additional funding to build capacity – encouraged to share and learn No imposed deadlines or targets, very little blueprint Plans are endorsed not approved Hands off (Local Trust)/Hands on (Rep) at no cost Not what Lottery expected – surprised by level of community activism People v place/people and place

4 Telling positive stories

5 Getting involved

6 Entrepreneurship

7 Tackle the big challenges

8 How does engagement work in Big Local?

9 Leading from the back My biggest challenge – ‘support’ can easily become ‘doing for’ Working at the place people are and not where they (you?) want them to be ‘It’s hard’ is not what loses people but lack of control and influence definitely does, small steps are key Successful partnership boards are about people and personality, skills can be learned/bought in This way of working is challenging for other organisations Role of the LTO is pivotal

10 Blank sheet of paper syndrome
Just do something, make a start, be visible Getting Started and Pathway funding Mistakes are encouraged (learning by doing) 1 year plan and 10 year vision Learning and developing – moving on to impact Identifying the USP, where value is added Freedom to do things differently - £1m can be insignificant but discretion never is

11 Different voices Consensus if you’re lucky
Negativity and apathy, passion and anger (some righteous) Geographic alliances and history Identifying, valuing and celebrating a different kind of knowledge Young people and ?? Outside front door v life chances Not about representation

12 Playing nicely with others
Doing things differently and doing different things Resentment and distrust Political dimension Officers raising their heads above the parapet Taking risk Community credibility Taking an asset approach but not denying structural issues – could let policy makers off the hook

13 Sharing a hymn sheet WHERE are we GOING
‘Where are we going?’ ‘I don’t know. I thought you knew.’ ‘No, I don’t know. Maybe she knows.’ ‘No. She definitely doesn’t know.’ PAUSE ‘Maybe no-one knows.’ ‘Oh well. I hope it’s nice when we get there.’ Long term goals, short term actions Ownership and responsibility Shared understanding of what success looks like Review and evaluation – this is all about change

14 One year on…….what do we think we have learned?

15 Negativity

16

17 Self-efficacy Self-efficacy

18

19 Growing our impact 15,000 people. 8,000 homes.
Next year – 100 people involved Now – actively involved Phase 1 – actively involved 15,000 people. 8,000 homes.

20 What might this mean for you?
Don’t be afraid of the big challenges. Start with who is in front of you. Invest in relationships. Be nimble. Look for change. Embrace diversity. Continually learn from each other. Networks – you don’t know who is around. Build on what is already there. Capacity still important.
