Who We Are Who We Are Foster Wheeler is one the world’s largest contract engineering companies and we have over 14,500 people worldwide. There are two business groups within the company; the Global Power Group which designs and supplies power equipment; and the Global Engineering and Construction Group which is the part of the company which you have joined. We design, engineer and manage the construction of complex process plants such as oil refineries and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities on behalf of companies like Shell, ExxonMobil and GlaxoSmithkline. This means that we undertake some of the largest and most complex engineering projects in the world, often valued at billions of pounds. We’re working in some of the most challenging environments on the planet, ranging from the deserts of Saudi Arabia to the swamplands of Nigeria. There are very few companies in the world which can manage projects of this scale and we’re highly respected within our industry. Our safety record is second to none and you can see just some of the safety awards that we’ve won around this building. We’ve also been around a long time – Foster Wheeler is 120 years’ old. Who We Are Safety and Ethics We are all responsible
Prevent incidents and accidents Get it right first time Continuous improvement - Learn from past mistakes or near misses Code of Business Conduct and Ethics Continuous Observation and Risk Evaluation (CORE) A big part of who Foster Wheeler are as a business is the way we do business. We take pride in working safely and ethically and we are all responsible for ensuring this high standard continues. I’d like to encourage you all to contribute actively to making sure that things happen the way that they should. Add your voice to discussions about how things should be done. If you can see a potential hazard, speak up and help get it fixed. We work to prevent safety incidents and accidents and to get it right first time. When things do go wrong, we try to learn from mistakes or near misses in a constructive way and without apportioning blame. We aim for continuous improvement in the way that we work. Our focus on safety on the sites where we work is very strong. If you’re visiting or going to work at a site you will be given a full induction on the safety procedures at that site by the relevant department or project. We aim for the same high standards in ethical issues. We’ll be telling you later this morning about our company’s Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, which lays out the standards that we maintain as a company. The reason that clients bring us their business time and time again is because they know that they can trust us, so maintaining these standards is a vital business issue for Foster Wheeler. CORE is a technique to change people’s behaviour and attitude towards safety. The ultimate aim of CORE is to ensure that people apply this behaviour to their work and all other aspects of their daily life. What is Motivation? Motivation is the force that makes us do things
Motivation can have an effect on the output of your business and concerns both quantity and quality Motivational theory Douglas Murray Hezberg Abraham Maslow J Stacy Adams Edward Tolman Victor VroomLyman Porter Edward Lawler And many others… Looking for inspiration and motivation? Motivation is a complex area. It's different for each person Your employees are your greatest asset and no matter how efficient your technology and equipment may be, it is no match for the effectiveness and efficiency of your staff. Therefore motivation matters. Motivation has been studied for many years stretching back beyond the 19th century. As a result, a large number of theorists have compiled their own conclusions and consequently a wide variety of motivational theory exists. In general though they all acknowledge that once the hygiene factors are meet the motivators can manefest themselves in different ways. But note the hygiene factors are an important starting point. i.e. most staff will not put up with poor pay and conditions for very long… In 1966, Herzberg interviewed a number of people in different professions at different levels to find out two things: Those factors that MOTIVATED them in the workplace Those factors that PREVENTED JOB DISSATISFACTION These did not make the employees happy (or have job satisfaction): They are also referred to as 'hygiene' factors. Such hygiene factors, if not satisfied, had an effect of reduced employee efficiency. Herzberg believed that all factors fell into one of these categories

In the midst of a recession how do you motivate?
Workload helps - winning a 5M man-hour project is a clear motivator to staff, when other contractors are not so busy… Introducing new employee benefits helps but can backfire… Keeping interest up with creativity, improvements and new stuff… There are many ways of improving motivation: ice-breakers and warm-ups for motivation motivational team building motivational coaching and training motivation personal motivation styles and learning motivation continual development and motivation improving empathy and communications for motivation motivation and creativity motivation for problem-solving and decision-making physical activity is motivational team building workshops are empowering and motivational team building games and activities are motivational saying thanks is hugely motivational motivational quotes - using inspirational quotations and sayings is motivational

Our Core Values INTEGRITY ACCOUNTABILITY HIGH PERFORMANCE
“Behaving ethically, safely, honestly and lawfully” ACCOUNTABILITY “Working to clear and mutually accepted responsibilities” “Hands-on management and decision making” “Accepting appropriate rewards and consequences” HIGH PERFORMANCE “Consistently meeting or exceeding expectations” “Focus on continuous improvement” VALUING PEOPLE “Treating people with respect and dignity” “Communicating with clarity and honesty” “Providing opportunities for people to reach their potential” TEAMWORK “Working collaboratively towards common goals” Foster Wheeler has core values to form the foundation of our culture and motivation They guide us on how we perform work and behave every day at every level in Foster Wheeler. They define the standards of behaviour to which we all expect to be held accountable. Our core values: underlie our work and how we interact with each other, our clients and other stakeholders Define what we stand for Guide us in making decisions Form the foundation of our systems and processes Importantly, they are not compromised in good or in tough times but more importantly managers must walk the talk continually and demonstrably W:D151/a/graphics\dept275\induction graphics\induction pres.ppt W:D151/a/graphics\dept275\induction graphics\induction pres.ppt

Promotional motivators
Executive Middle Management Decreasing opportunities Of Course promotion is a huge motivator but as you move up the organisation there becomes increasingly fewer options… Project task forces help in this issues as they effectively become mini versions of the bigger organisation Staff
14
The Hygiene Factors can easily turn to Demotivators
Pension changes Motivational theory describes motivators in layers. Providing the most basic, heat and security are fulfilled peoples expectations raise. Ordinarily Heat and security are always covered, but when a major pension change is proposed strange behaviours can begin… The move from Defined Benefit to Defined contribution is without doubt a major shift in employee benefits Fortunately most companies are going down the same route in this difficult market. What would happen if companies started to break ranks?

Creativity and innovation
Business Improvements and innovation are motivators People like to fix stuff Relook at how things are done and mend the bits that are ineffective or broken from previous projects People like to create New systems and technology are generally considered exciting and to be taken advantage of. People like to be part of ‘special’ teams Team working, brain storming and special tasks Motivation comes in many different ways. People feel better if they think they can make a difference. Fixing broken work processes or getting the bottom of complex issues generates create interest both in those investigating and those accepting or challenging the conclusions Creativity – A well known motivator. People like to re-invent or put their personal stamp onto processes. It creates buy-in, a sense of ownership and generally avoids the feeling that the company is old fashioned. At FW we have re generated our Business systems Improvements programme to upgrade, renew and in some case fill new requirements for a range of business processes. This creates a huge sense of excitement and participation, which everyone wants to be part of, form the board (approving the ideas and spend) down to the shop floor (where people want to evidence their personal knowledge of how things are done and that they could do it better, if only they were allowed) Generally the creation of special task forces or project teams give ideal vehicles for motivational exercises and allowing people the opportunity to challenge the norm, which improves motivation.
16
Conclusion Motivation matters Hygiene or basic employment conditions are ‘must haves’ Motivation can take on many faces
