How does Steinbeck present the theme of prejudice for people on the ranch at the time the novel is set? (30 marks) In Part (b) you will always have to discuss the whole of ‘Of Mice and Men’. You should aim to spend about twenty minutes on this part of the question.

George pretended a lack of interest. "Looks like we was gonna have fun." The swamper stood up from his box. "Know what I think?" George did not answer. "Well, I think Curley's married... a tart.” "He ain't the first," said George. "There's plenty done that.”

14 Sample paragraph: Steinbeck presents a range of different prejudices at work on the ranch. One of the first examples of this is the prejudice Lennie faces about his lack of mental ability; George fears this may prevent the pair of them from getting a job. He instructs Lennie not to “say a word” as “if he finds out what a crazy bastard you are, we won't get no job”. Although George does try his best to look after Lennie throughout the novel, his use of the word “crazy” and the expletive “bastard” does show that even he lacks sensitivity towards Lennie’s condition. In the 1930s North America there would certainly not have been much of an understanding about learning difficulties and George’s statement shows that many potential bosses would have been prejudiced against Lennie. George’s fears about the two of them not being able to find a job also highlights how difficult the circumstances were for migrant workers; the depression had lead to a scarcity of jobs and George is clearly unwilling to risk anything jeopardising their chances of work.
