1 Review questions for Key Idea 1
1.a. Places are multi-faceted, shaped by shifting flows and connections which change over time.

2 Starter: Answer these knowledge- based review questions:
1.Name the 6 characteristics that make up the identity of a place. (2 marks). 2.What are the differences between demographic and socio-economic characteristics? (3 marks). 3.What is meant by the term “knowledge economy”? (2 marks)

3 Answers: 1. Name the six characteristics that make up the identity of a place. The six characters that make up the identity of a place are physical geography, demography, socio-economic indicators, culture, politics and the nature of the built environment. 2. What are the differences between demographic and socio- economic characteristics? Demographic data are things like number of inhabitants, their ages, gender and ethnicity. Socio-economic gives a richer insight to the standard of living of the people in an area by supplying data on employment status, income and family status and levels of education. 3. What is meant by the knowledge economy? The knowledge economy refers to the use of intelligence and ideas to create money. For example, The Meteorological Office moved from Reading to Exeter in 2003 and at the time was the single largest move of IT equipment in Europe. It has provided a strong economic stimulus to the region, bringing in many knowledge-based jobs.

4 4.For a place that you have studied at the local scale, explain how the physical characteristics have influenced its place identity. [3 marks].

5 What would you include to write an excellent answer for this review question?
5. In what ways can the cultural face of place indicate its identity. Refer to named examples in your answer. (4 marks) Look at the student response to this question.

6 How well do you think you could answer these to extended answer questions?
6. For a named local place that you have studied, examine how the shifting flows of resources, ideas and people have helped shaped its identity. (6 marks) 7. For a contrasting named local place that you have studied, explain how different characteristics have helped shape its identity. (15 marks) What are the questions asking you to do?

7 Understanding command words
Examine: Consider carefully and provide a detailed account of the indicated topic. Explain: Set out the causes of a phenomenon (why) and/or the factors which influence its form/nature. This usually requires an understanding of processes. Explanation is a higher-level skill than description and this is often reflected in its greater mark weighting.

8 How well do you think you could answer these to extended answer questions?
6. For a named local place that you have studied, examine how the shifting flows of resources, ideas and people have helped shaped its identity. (6 marks) Read the model answer. Look at: The structure and organisation of the answer. The key terms used. The factual information included and how it is included. How does it maintain a focus on the question?

9 The local places you have studied and so could have chosen to answer this questions were Toxteth or Lympstone. You needed to comment upon shifting flows of people; jobs; money bought about by the rise in the knowledge economy and EU funding if Lympstone or by the decline of industry (deindustrialisation) experienced in Toxteth. You could discuss the changing/shifting flows bought about by the rise in Knowledge economy and EU funding in Liverpool and the impact this has had on Toxteth. You needed to link to how identity would change in terms of changing demographic and socio-economic profile bought about by these changing flows. Explore how this could also lead to change in cultural and political profile/identity.

10 How to write an excellent extended answer.
7. For a contrasting named local place that you have studied, explain how different characteristics have helped shape its identity. (15 marks) Read the model answer. Look at: The structure and organisation of the answer. The key terms used. The factual information included and how it is included. How does it maintain a focus on the question? Now use your notes to plan out a similar answer for Toxteth.
