1 Images in Curved Mirrors

2 Centre of Curvature Centre of curvature = centre of sphere
Called point C C Line going through C and hitting middle of mirror is the principal axis Where principal axis meets mirror is called the vertex V Convex mirror Concave mirror

3 Part I - Concave Mirrors
Reflective surface on the inner surface of sphere aka converging mirror Hint: you go “inside” a “cave”

4 Concave Mirrors…focus!
Light rays that are parallel to principal axis are reflected off a concave mirror and converge through a single point Point is called the focus, labeled F VF is half the distance of VC (or C is 2F) F V

5 Reflection in a Concave Mirror
A light ray parallel to the principal axis is reflected through the focus A light ray through centre of curvature (C) will reflect back on itself A ray through F will reflect parallel to the principal axis A ray aimed at the vertex will follow the Law of Reflection 4 3 1 2 F C

6 Images in a Concave Mirror
Blue line – across top of object; reflected through focal point Purple line – across top of object & through focal point; reflected parallel to principal axis Yellow line – through C and across top of object; reflected back on itself

7 Activity! In your lab groups, conduct investigation 11.10 on Pg. 502
Complete Part A and Part B #1-8 Don’t go any further than #8 for now!

8 Part II - Convex Mirrors
Reflective surface on the outer surface of sphere aka diverging mirrors Used in store security

9 Convex Mirrors Rays always diverge Known as diverging mirrors
Reflected rays never cross in front of mirror Always a virtual image

10 Reflection in a Convex Mirror
Draw parallel line across top of object; reflected in a line that would go through F Draw a line across top of object and through F; reflected parallel to principal axis Draw line across top of object and through C; reflected back onto itself F C

11 Images in a Convex Mirror

12 Activity! In your lab groups, continue working on Investigation on Pg. 502 Finish Part B #9-11 and complete questions (a) to (l) on Pg. 503
