What does that mean? If you’re doing a backup in a virtual environment, you’re only backing up the parts that are changed. All of that is done without a data burn on the processor. Click x2 First, if we take off the bezel and open it up, you’ll see it’s a standard x86 server with standard components like HDD, SSD, DRAM and x86 CPU and memory. And just like any other host, we’re running ESXi Click Then, we bring in the DVP, which sits architecturally between the hardware and the hypervisor, abstracting the hardware from the VMs / apps that are running on top. Within that layer sits the Accelerator Card, the PCIe card that deduplicates, compresses and optimizes all data inline at inception once and forever, like we’ve already discussed. When we peel back the onion a bit, you’ll see that the DVP actually has two layers: 1. the presentation layer, which is what VMware will logically interact with; and 2. the management layer, where the metadata is stored and managed Let’s take a look at the write path. The first thing that happens is a new write will come in. VMware will write it and we’ll register the metadata. What actually happens first is that it will really write it to the card. Then the card will synchronously mirror to another card in another node for High Availability. When both cards have the data, they’ll persist it and acknowledge back to the host. Each card has 8GB of cache and NVRAM and supercapacitors. In case the power fails, the card will flush to NVRAM to protect the data. Then, we’ll analyze the data. If it’s unique, as this block is at 8KB, then we’ll write it to HDD in compressed form. Another write comes in. It’s unique, we’ll compress it and write it to disk. Another write that’s green this time Now, let’s see what happens when a duplicate block – which is most blocks – comes in. We know that the fastest I/O is the one you never have to write, and therefore by eliminating I/O, you’ll increase performance. So let’s see what that looks like. When that duplicate block comes in, VMware think it wrote unique data. However, the DVP recognizes that that block already exists somewhere within the shared resource pool. It updates the metadata and that’s it. No data was written! No new I/O. And another duplicate block comes in. And the same, no new data written. 13 Scale-Out and Open Architecture

Scale-out is critical to IT organizations being able to correctly size IT infrastructure. Trying to predict what the infrastructure will look like in 3 years and purchase storage based on that prediction just doesn’t work. SimpliVity allows the environment to be right-sized. Buy the capacity that is needed for the next 6 months and add another OmniCube when you need to expand. CLICK We call a collection of 2 more mode OmniCubes a Federation. This slide shows a single 10GbE switch, but we obviously support full redundancy. We also support direct connect 10GbE for configurations up to 3 nodes. Adding a node to the federation is as simple as plugging it into the network, selecting it in the GUI, and clicking the join button. The SimpliVity shared resource pool automatically extends to include the new node. The key to scale-out is not adding an island, but instead adding resources that are shared with the rest of the federation. SimpliVity not only shares the capacity, but the performance capabilities of the new node are available to all of the local nodes. As an example, we could also add a cheap and deep archive node. Again, the resources become available to every node in the local datacenter. In traditional storage arrays, there is the inevitable data migration event. VMware has simplified the process of migrating the virtual machines by using VMotion. Unfortunately, it is not practical to use Storage VMotion to migrate terabytes of VMs. SimpliVity provides a simple evacuate function. Evacuate the data from a node and it will be rebalanced to the other nodes in the local datacenter without ever violating an SLA or requiring the reconfiguration of any policy. We believe it is critical to integrate with existing infrastructure. We allow the legacy servers to connect to the federation and leverage our storage services. Fast Application Restore from Full VM Backup App 3 App 4 App 5 ESXi ESXi PRESENTATION LAYER PRESENTATION LAYER DATA MANAGEMENT LAYER DATA MANAGEMENT LAYER Key Points: Policy is abstracted from underlying resources VM centricity and mobility Backups, locally or remote, are mostly just metadata updates, allowing for incredibly fast RPOs and RTOs Full logical backups, not snaps Script: Now, let’s expand this a bit to talk about how the DVP – and the efficiency it provides inherently – can truly improve operational efficiencies around what we call global unified management and native data protection. For starters, let’s say you have a data center in San Francisco with three OmniCubes. Click And let’s say you have another in New York with two. This is what we would call a 3+2 configuration. The first thing to notice is that these data centers are data centers. They are not LUN IDs or volumes or some other abstract, archaic notion. Instead, they are physical places that act as such, a shared resource pool to manage VMs for your data centers in San Fran and New York. We connect the two data centers with the DVP. This creates a “SimpliVity federation” or a global network of resources to manage your VMs, all from the same single pane of glass, whether it’s vCenter or VMware vRA, or Cisco UCS Director. Within this global federation, you can start to do some really interesting things. Let’s see what happens when, for example, you want to take a local backup. In the legacy world, you’d probably have a mix of array- based snapshots combined with backup software like Symantec or CommVault or Veeam combined with a backup to disk deduplication appliance. With SimpliVity, you just right-click in vCenter and press “backup.” At that point, you get a full logical backup at the speed of a snap. How? Because we don’t have to write any new data! By definition, with a local backup, the data already exists. All that needs to happen is a metadata update for any changed blocks since the last full backup, which we can do at 10 minute RPOs. We can typically backup a local VM in SECONDS, let me show you in the demo in a moment. Perhaps even more interesting, what if you wanted to take a remote backup? Well, you wouldn’t want to send all of that data over the WAN as it would take forever. So instead, with the power of the DVP, you can just right-click in vCenter and press “remote backup.” At that point, instead of sending the data, we’ll just send the metadata “map.” The remote data center – in this case, New York – will look at its shared resource pool to see what data at granular 8KB it already has, and what data it’s missing. Then, it’s smart enough to only request the data it’s missing. And San Francisco only sends across the unique data needed to complete the full logical backup on the remote side. A simple metaphor might be a deck of cards. If you have 52 cards in San Francisco and your buddy is missing 3 cards in New York, why send all 52? Instead, just send the 3 cards he’s missing. Another example would be a lego set. Each friend has a bucket of legos and both want to build a firehouse. It’s likely that both kids already have most of the legos they need. So instead of one friend sending his entire bucket, just send the directions, have the friend take a look and compare what he needs to what he already has, and then only send over what you need. Click x2 From there, you can restore your VM on the other side and be back up and running in minutes. A great use case for operational restore, for test/development around the sun, for disaster recovery. All natively built in by design with the SimpliVity DVP.
